Using the 19th-century photographic process, Sternbach portrays surfboards as singular artifacts shaped by craftsmanship, use, history, and the ocean itself. Her images bridge centuries of photographic tradition and the enduring culture of surfing, creating works that feel both timeless and distinctly contemporary.

The resulting photographs combine the tactile immediacy of historical photographic methods with the enduring iconography of surf culture. Removed from the ocean and presented as singular subjects, the boards become portraits in their own right—records of human touch, craftsmanship, and lived experience. Sternbach’s use of the wet plate collodion process introduces a distinctive visual language marked by luminous detail, rich tonalities, and the subtle imperfections inherent to handmade photographic materials.

LINDSAY PERRYMAN – TOPS

Perryman, born and raised in New York, uses portraiture to push back against narrow ideas of transgender identity. The images in Tops do not treat transition as a single event or a neat narrative. They hold space for process: tenderness, recovery, grief, community and the scarred body as a record of change. That attention gives the work its force. What appears personal is also social, since the film and photographs frame healing as something built through care, support and recognition from others.

The exhibition moves between still and moving images, with photographs made before, during and after the film’s production forming a larger body of work. Perryman includes literal self-portraits as well as images that stand in for self-portraiture through the bodies of others, underscoring the role of visibility in trans life. To be seen here means more than representation. It means being pictured in a way that acknowledges complexity, vulnerability and resilience without reducing them to symbols.

SCIAMA WAVE – INTERACTION

Returning to Samurai Music following last year’s Between Veils, Sciama opens up a new portal of exacting sonic exploration with Wave Interaction. Moving through dense drone shrouds, steely sound design and tense, taut rhythms, Michael Watters lays out a manifesto for waveform resonance within the half-time D&B tempo range.

Wave Interaction is the precursor to a forthcoming album that will lay out a purposeful study of the interaction between machine-made sound waves and human perception, inspired by the teachings of early electronic music pioneer Daphne Oram. As an opening statement, ‘Cele’ maximises on a patient, spacious arrangement that allows the carefully sculpted layers of waveforms to resonate with minimal distractions. Far from minimal, it’s a dense and evocative sound world Watters builds up. ‘Excitation’ brings more detailed percussive sequencing into the mix, teasing pin-prick snatches of breakbeats and designer ripples that dart around the psychoactive tonal elements in the mix.

TOPDOWN DIALECTIC – FALSE LP A

Born from enigma, Topdown Dialectic has entranced dub and techno internet scavengers since 2013. Izaak Schlossman has since been revealed as the project’s mastermind, but its cryptic nature remains: False LP A collects archival tracks among new material, all at exactly 5 minutes long, providing a series of canvases on which he methodically stretches and splatters sound. Scurrying in with minuscule dub, the grooves that eventually emerge are lax and content to be quiet, as suggestions of vocals are shrouded in whirring ambience, rickety wooden synthesis, and mistral winds sweeping over clinking details.
