LINDSAY PERRYMAN – TOPS
2026-08-24Perryman, born and raised in New York, uses portraiture to push back against narrow ideas of transgender identity. The images in Tops do not treat transition as a single event or a neat narrative. They hold space for process: tenderness, recovery, grief, community and the scarred body as a record of change. That attention gives the work its force. What appears personal is also social, since the film and photographs frame healing as something built through care, support and recognition from others.
The exhibition moves between still and moving images, with photographs made before, during and after the film’s production forming a larger body of work. Perryman includes literal self-portraits as well as images that stand in for self-portraiture through the bodies of others, underscoring the role of visibility in trans life. To be seen here means more than representation. It means being pictured in a way that acknowledges complexity, vulnerability and resilience without reducing them to symbols.
