HEJI SHIN – THE BIG NUDES

Posted on 2023-05-29

Throughout her photographic practice, Shin has skirted the boundaries of convention, creating images that challenge judgments of taste vis-à-vis fashion, celebrity, and sexuality. This will be her first solo exhibition in New York since 2020.

Shin’s practice oscillates fluidly between the commercial and fine-art realms, and the work she exhibits in gallery and museum contexts is strongly influenced by the editorial work she produces. Shin often shoots her varied subjects at close range and employs the vernacular of fashion photography, in which lighting and display are paramount in drawing attention to covetable merchandise. Revealing our scopophilic tendencies while refusing to essentialize or pass moral judgment on her subjects, Shin’s eye mines the prohibited and the liminal to deconstruct notions of propriety. Her photographs intimately peer into the unseen spaces between photographer and subject, self and other, as well as public and private.

ULLA WIGGEN – VISIONARY MACHINERIES

Posted on 2023-05-29

In 1963, Ulla Wiggen started to make meticulous gouache paintings on gauze depicting electronic components, circuit boards, and the insides of computers. Although rendered with a quasi-objective accuracy and loosely based on real components, her diagrammatic representations are, in fact, fantastical interpretations; from a technical standpoint, the circuits are incoherent and non-functional. A few years later, Wiggen began using acrylic paints on panels and slowly increased the size of her works. But despite these changes in scale and medium, her content remained firmly within the sphere of technological portraiture.

STÜSSY X DOVER STREET MARKET

Posted on 2023-05-29

Venturing out of its flagship home in London’s famous streetwear hub of Soho, this new Dover Street Market collaboration will be stocked a mere 15 minutes away from the official DSM store.

The collection starts with a new line of T-shirts, all of which feature a slew of intricately-designed graphics. Meanwhile, hoodies remain a core part of Stüssy’s releases, with several zip-up silhouettes being released with customary branding on the chest, with further collaborative motifs on the back.

Crew neck jumpers round off the collection, with new styles coming in khaki green color schemes, once again complemented by minimal branding on the chest, while tailored detailing around the sleeve cuffs and waist bands keep things snug.

RICHARD SEN PRESENTS DREAM THE DREAM (UK TECHNO, BREAKBEAT AND HOUSE 1990-1994)

Posted on 2023-05-29

Richard Sen has been immersed in dance music for over three decades, producing, remixing, and DJing all over the world, and witnessing crucial moments in the scene’s continuum. If there’s any one person to recount the history of UK dance, it’s undoubtedly him. With the first release of Ransom Note’s new Dance Music From Planet Earth sublabel, he remembers the optimism of early 90s rave and the gauzy layers of fantasy its tracks are wrapped in.

While telling the story with a trim ten tracks scouted from record stores back in the day, the generously extended runtime of Dream The Dream gives each track room to breathe. The almost eleven minute opener ‘Tokyo’ from Centuras sets the scene admirably: a slowburn of synth bubbles and icy pad floes, the measured pace of pulsing beats, sprinkling in far flung, new agey chants and woodwinds.
