HOUSEBOUND

Posted on 2015-06-29

Ill-tempered delinquent Kylie Bucknell is forced to return to the house she grew up in when the court places her on home detention. Her punishment is made all the more unbearable by the fact she has to live there with her mother Miriam. Unable to go beyond the front gate, she’s forced to wait hours on end to use the telephone while listening to her mother’s ludicrous theories that the house is haunted.

Kylie initially dismisses her mother’s superstitions as nothing more than a conscious distraction from a life occupied by boiled vegetables and small-town gossip. However, when she too becomes privy to unsettling whispers, strange bumps in the night and a creepy teddy with a penchant for inappropriate small talk, she begins to wonder whether she’s inherited her mother’s overactive imagination, or if the house is in fact possessed by a hostile spirit who’s not particularly thrilled about her return.

Help comes in the form of Kylie’s ghost-obsessed home detention security guard Amos who regards paranormal matters with the casual grace of a plumber diagnosing a leaky pipe. Together they begin to unravel the secrets that lie within the walls. As the mystery unfolds, Kylie is drawn into a tangle of terror that forces her to reevaluate her belligerent behaviour as well as her fractured relationship with her mother.

AMY

Posted on 2015-06-29

From BAFTA award-winning director Asif Kapadia (SENNA), AMY tells the incredible story of six-time Grammy-winner Amy Winehouse – in her own words.

Featuring extensive unseen archive footage and previously unheard tracks, this strikingly modern, moving and vital film shines a light on the world we live in, in a way that very few can.

A once-in-a-generation talent, Amy Winehouse was a musician that captured the world’s attention. A pure jazz artist in the most authentic sense – she wrote and sung from the heart using her musical gifts to analyse her own problems. The combination of her raw honesty and supreme talent resulted in some of the most unique and adored songs of the modern era.
Her huge success, however, resulted in relentless and invasive media attention which coupled with Amy’s troubled relationships and precarious lifestyle saw her life tragically begin to unravel.

Amy Winehouse died from alcohol poisoning in July 2011 at the age of 27.

D*FACE

Posted on 2015-06-29

D*Face can be considered one of the most provocative of today’s street artists, a term the artist himself says that he detests. Through his use of Pop Art’s images and subtlety, his narrative style frequently refers to the fragility of life while reflecting popular culture, the notion of “good” triumphing over “evil”, and the stereotypes of the “American Dream”. Using a recognisable style, he encourages visitors to question the curious growth of fascination with celebrity, fame and the consumerism associated with this phenomenon. Wasted Youth, the first solo exhibition on D*Face to be held in a Spanish museum, offers a continuation of this discourse. It presents a new group of 39 works, some of them specifically created for this event and including large-scale paintings on canvas that are reinterpretations of images adapted to the artist’s classics, and installation works.

Exhibition runs through to September 27th, 2015

IAN FRANCIS- THE CHOSEN FORM OF YOUR DESTROYER

Posted on 2015-06-29

The Chosen Form of Your Destroyer is focused on a new series of mixed media works depicting the coexistence of beauty and destruction in modern society. The Bristol-based artist celebrates his third full-scale solo exhibition at Rathbone Place this year, once again transporting his viewers into other-worldly realms, littered with subconscious realities and blurred boundaries synonymous with his work to date.

The artist’s cross-disciplinary approach weaves intricate layers of both painting and drawing to create distinctly ultra-modern works, providing a powerful dialogue between contemporary techniques and dystopian cinematic content. Francis utilises a high-contrast mixture of oil, ink, acrylic, graphite and charcoal to construct works that are both dramatically appealing and visually striking, whilst alluding to underlying notes of melancholy, alienation and social critique. The new series of paintings continue to examine reoccurring themes of constructed worlds, virtual relationships and shifting dimensions that underpin Francis’ wider practice.

The Chosen Form of Your Destroyer will present a combination of figurative monochromatic paintings alongside larger compositions depicting fantastical narratives spiralling just out of our reach. Francis is fascinated with the moment of quiet fragility ahead of a majestic destruction, referencing the lack of individual choice and identity amid a much larger, uncontrollable force. Abstraction and figuration mutually support the artist’s suggestion of a world view where violence and style intersect, balancing a careful mix of intimate moments and all-encompassing narratives. The forthcoming exhibition revisits Francis’ interest in sensationalist media and human interaction within an ever-evolving contemporary landscape, capturing still-frames charged with conflict, passion and mystery.

Exhibition runs from July 8th through to August 1st, 2015
