SERPENTINE PAVILION 2015 BY SELGASCANO

Posted on 2015-06-29

Serpentine Galleries celebrates the 15th anniversary of the world-renowned Pavilion commission with a design by Spanish architects selgascano. Since it was launched in 2000 by Gallery Director Julia Peyton-Jones, the Serpentine Pavilion has become an international site for architectural experimentation, presenting inspirational temporary structures by some of the world’s greatest architects, including Peter Zumthor, 2011; Frank Gehry, 2008; Rem Koolhaas and Cecil Balmond, with Arup, 2006; Oscar Niemeyer, 2003; Daniel Libeskind with Arup, 2001 and Zaha Hadid, who designed the inaugural Pavilion in 2000. A much-anticipated landmark in London each summer, the Pavilion is one of the top-ten most visited architectural anddesign exhibitions in the world.

Selgascano’s design for the 15th Pavilion, sponsored by Goldman Sachs, reveals an amorphous, double-skinned, polygonal structure consisting of panels of a translucent, multi-coloured fluorine-based polymer (ETFE) woven through and wrapped like webbing. Visitors can enter and exit the Pavilion at a number of different points, passing through a ‘secret corridor’ between the outer and inner layer of the structure and into the Pavilion’s colourful interior. The architects’ inspiration not only came from the site itself, but from the ways in which people move through London, notably the London Underground with its many-layered, chaotic yet structured flow.

Exhibition runs through to October 18th, 2015

KORNEL KOVACS – RADIO KOKO

Posted on 2015-06-29

Studio Barnhus co-founder Kornél Kovács lands on Glaswegian institute Numbers. On Radio Koko, the DJ and producer from Stockholm invents an imaginary radio station with the same name, and presents its four tracks as part of its programme. The jacking ‘Lighthouse’ opens with disco-style strings, a gently grooving beat and introvert mallet patterns. ‘Gangsta’ cleverly plays with hip hop beat references: Kovács works his sustained nocturnal piano melodies and syncopated reese-style bass sequence into a steady house rhythm. The special guest of the show, fellow Stockholm producer Marcus Price, makes his contribution on the sunny ‘Malon’. As it turns out however, Kovács saved the true hit for last: the vocal chorus of the 80s flavoured ‘Pantalon’.

JIM DOW – TACO TRUCKS, TAQUERIAS & CARRITOS

Posted on 2015-06-29

Jim Dow’s photographs focus on the passage of time as it is recorded in landscapes from North Dakota to Great Britain to Argentina. Using an 8 x 10 inch view camera, Dow turns his lens to roadside signs, aging buildings, and interiors that feel locked in another era. His images honestly record the scenes before his camera, avoiding sentiments of nostalgia while paying tribute to lands marked by past and current residents. A leading American photographer, Dow pushes his viewer to reconsider familiar surroundings and discern the beauty and cultural history hidden in modern landscapes.

Dow first gained attention for his panoramic triptychs of baseball stadiums, a project that began with an image he made of Veteran’s Stadium in Philadelphia in 1980. Dow has documented more than two hundred major and minor league parks in the United States and Canada.

NORTH KOREAN PERSPECTIVES

Posted on 2015-06-29

The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), or North Korea, has been called the Hermit Kingdom, as it is one of the most reclusive states in the world. North Korea’s citizens are not allowed to travel abroad, there is no Internet connection to the outside world, and the flow of information is almost completely controlled by the government. This exhibition will be divided into two main sections: one showing the government’s official version of North Korea, while the other offers the alternative view of the country. Imagery distributed through official channels, such as the country’s press agency KCNA, which is based in Japan, and those photographed by tourists on state-controlled tours will offer an official view. These official images will be juxtaposed with a non-controlled stream of images coming out of the country: photographs produced by international photojournalists from within the nation, and international artists using photography and video to directly address North Korea. North Korean Perspectives is organized by Europe-based independent curator Marc Prüst in collaboration with MoCP’s Executive Director Natasha Egan.
