KELLY LEE OWENS – ARPEGGI

Posted on 2020-08-31

Tracks such as ‘Arpeggi’, the Radiohead cover which begins Inner Song, and the John Cale collaboration ‘Corner Of My Sky’ find Owens maintaining the sonic palette of techno but pushing on into a zone of etherised electronics that draws from Spiritualized, Brian Eno and μ-Ziq. Owens says that Inner Song has emerged from a rather difficult period in her personal life, and on electro-ballads like ‘Re-Wild’ we find her facing down those experiences with some of her most forthright vocal performances to date. Glasser and Owens’ former collaborator Jon Hopkins would both be good points of comparison for these numbers. However, Owens does not allow her struggles to overshadow her love for the dancefloor – ‘Melt!’ and ‘Jeanette’ are the sort of steely-eyed, slightly trippy techno tools one associates with labels like Ostgut Ton and Stroboscopic Artefacts.

MARVIN E. NEWMAN – LOOKING PAST SHADOWS

Posted on 2020-08-31

From his earliest days as a photographer on the streets of Chicago, Marvin E. Newman has worked to harmonize formal experimentation with a sensitive, ever-present humanism. Whether on editorial commission for Sports Illustrated or Look Magazine (two of the many publications that he contributed to for the better part of five decades), or whether he was capturing the shadows and silhouettes cast by pedestrians on city streets, Newman’s photography has always been structured by a deep fascination with the medium’s fundamental duality: light and shadow.

A pioneering color photographer, Newman helped define a standard for editorial work in that format during the 1950’s, a time when few photographers were shooting in color outside of fashion and advertising.

Looking Past Shadows presents a selection of photographs that spans the breadth of Newman’s career, from his earliest experiments in Chicago up to present day pictures of beachgoers and sunbathers.

New York-based Marc Hundley’s practice is known for his unique way of encapsulating moments that can be considered intimate and solitary. Lyrics lifted from songs, text found in books and poetry, along with found imagery all lend themselves to Hundley’s hand-painted ‘posters’ and printed Xerox works, inscribed with the date and address of when and where the source was encountered.

SUSAN PHILIPSZ – SLEEP CLOSE AND FAST

Posted on 2020-08-31

Sleep Close and Fast presents a new seven channel sound installation featuring recordings of lullabies sung in the artist’s own voice. Culled from a variety of sources including cult horror films, opera and literature, the lullabies chosen all share dark and haunting undertones. Emanating from stainless steel barrels, the sculptural acoustics suggest deep space, distance and memory. The voice recordings are accompanied by a percussion beat set to the rhythm of the artist’s heartbeat, acting as a metronome for the lullaby.
