JAMEL SHABAZZ – REFLECTIONS FROM THE 80’S

Posted on 2015-02-24

Shabazz has been representing urban New York’s visual history for the past 40 years. Through his iconic images capturing the lifestyle and vibrant energy of the time like no other. he became one of the key people to immortalize the New York of the 80’s To this day his quintessential and mesmerizing work inspires international fashion trends, global youth culture, and has also served as a source of inspiration for countless films. His secret lies in his care and his devotion to people.

New York in the 80’s was rough around the edges: violent rivalling street gangs, drugs, and arrests were part of the city’s dark-sided fabric that interlaced with the artistic expression of social and political injustices of the African-American community. Many young people found themselves at a difficult crossroads or facing challenging and often violent day-to-day realities. Jamel wanted to do what he could to ease the tension of his community and help kids stay out of trouble. So he and his camera took to the streets, attracting young people for whom he became a mentor and inspiration regarding life and making choices and keeping a positive outlook for the future.

His photographs are Jamel’s visual diary – a collection of memories, moments, conversations, people and details. They reflect these personal relationships, while speaking to universal sentiments of hope, dreams, self-discovery and living-the-moment shared by all adolescence.

GROENI – HEWN

Posted on 2015-02-23

Created at the foot of Mount Taranaki, ‘Hewn’ is the sophomore release by Wellington, NZ based producer / musician Groeni. Representing a departure from one idea in order to rediscover and understand another, the record deals with the interactions of two sets of people, paralleling and contrasting them. Throughout the record, the lines become blurred – subjects merge and intertwine, adopting combined, often confused perspectives.

While retaining the melancholic / dark-pop quality of his previous EP, this record further explores UK bass music from a south west pacific perspective. Using elements of lo-fi mixed with clean production and resampling field recordings and digital synths through tape players and old microphones, Groeni creates an intimate and eery atmosphere that will draw in and mesmerize his listeners.

‘Hewn’ comes out worldwide on limited vinyl and limited handmade cassette edition (both including download code).

ORIGINS

Posted on 2015-02-23

The exhibition will explore the effects of globalisation through the prism of indigenous cultures. Origins aims to question whether the forces of globalisation have eroded our sense of identity and isolated us from nature and the traditions that make us unique. Origins also asks viewers to consider the lessons the ‘developed world’ can learn from indigenous populations, such as how to address modern problems that are, for the most part, a result of modern lifestyles.

“We have found ourselves living on a planet whose citizens are slowly forming uniform pan-global identities, in which people are increasingly beginning to sound alike, act alike and believe in the same things. Despite the great contributions that the march towards modernity has made towards our civilisations, it has started to strip us of what makes us fundamentally unique, what makes us human.” Mashael Al-Rushaid
