STAN DOUGLAS – DOPPELGÄNGER

Posted on 2020-01-09

Since the late 1980s, Stan Douglas has created films and photographs – and more recently theatre productions and other multidisciplinary projects – that investigate the parameters of their medium. His ongoing inquiry into technology’s role in image-making, and how those mediations infiltrate and shape collective memory, has resulted in works that are at once specific in their historical and cultural references and broadly accessible.

Doppelgänger is set in an alternative present. Displayed on two square-format, translucent screens, each of which can be viewed from both sides, the looped narrative unfolds in side-by-side vignettes that depict events on worlds that are light years apart. When one spacecraft embarks on its journey, another is launched at the same time in a parallel reality. Alice, a solitary astronaut, is teleported to a distant planet, and so is her double. Then, Alice and her ship, the Hermes II, for unknown reasons, return. Alice assumes her mission has failed and she has somehow returned home; but she has, in fact, arrived at a world where everything, from writing to the rotation of the sun, is literally the reverse of what she once knew.

BJARKI – PSYCHOTIC_WINDOW

Posted on 2020-01-06

Following a string of releases via his own bbbbbb records, along with bodies of work on трип, February 2019 saw Bjarki debut on !K7 Records with the ‘Happy Earthday’ album. With the album considered to be the Icelandic producers first full debut LP, ‘Happy Earthday’ offered a conceptual collection of music which Bjarki thought he would never release. Influenced by his home country of Iceland as well as the planet’s environmental issues, the album received support across the board from the likes of The Quietus, DJ Mag, Pitchfork, XLR8R, FACT and CLASH Music, along with being crowned Mixmag’s ‘album of the month’.

MARS89 – THE DROOGS

Posted on 2020-01-06

Mars89’s ‘The Droogs’ soundtrack slips out in three parts of greyscale cyberpunk grunge ranging from the laminal flow of effluent bass undercurrents and vaporous chords in ‘Horrorshow’, to the tense noise theatricality and eviscerated drums of ‘Ultraviolence’, before shoring up at the bombed-out scenes of ‘Strack’ with its pensile percussion and wrung-out, salty squeal primed to sensitively evoke Undercover’s military tech aesthetic and pop cultural reference points.

Thom Yorke follows the eerie electronic themes of his ’Suspiria’ soundtrack with a killer harmonic loosening and smudging of ‘Horrorshow’ that contrasts with Zomby’s rugged remix of ‘Strack’, where he colours in the gaps with duppied rave vibes, and again with Low Jack’s thoroughly rinsed-out take on the same elements, heavily screwed to a demonically darkside deep south drill style.
