MARS89 – THE DROOGS
2020-01-06Mars89’s ‘The Droogs’ soundtrack slips out in three parts of greyscale cyberpunk grunge ranging from the laminal flow of effluent bass undercurrents and vaporous chords in ‘Horrorshow’, to the tense noise theatricality and eviscerated drums of ‘Ultraviolence’, before shoring up at the bombed-out scenes of ‘Strack’ with its pensile percussion and wrung-out, salty squeal primed to sensitively evoke Undercover’s military tech aesthetic and pop cultural reference points.
Thom Yorke follows the eerie electronic themes of his ’Suspiria’ soundtrack with a killer harmonic loosening and smudging of ‘Horrorshow’ that contrasts with Zomby’s rugged remix of ‘Strack’, where he colours in the gaps with duppied rave vibes, and again with Low Jack’s thoroughly rinsed-out take on the same elements, heavily screwed to a demonically darkside deep south drill style.
