EDISON PEÑAFIEL – MARE MAGNVM: LA LLEGADA

Posted on 2021-11-29

Edison Peñafiel’s exhibition introduces the viewer to 81 characters in a succesive series of black and white portraits.

“MARE MAGNVM: La Llegada” does not refer only to a single or specific event. No information is given on the characters’ origin or their personal history. Their faces are not visible, covered by papier-mâché masks typical from Peñafiel’s native Ecuador, that both humanize and depersonify these character. The identity of these people remains temporally and culturally ambiguous, and unspecific costuming transforms them into archetypal representatives of any diasporic population.

BRAD WILSON – THE OTHER WORLD

Posted on 2021-11-22

The Other World: Animal Portraits, published through Damiani Publishers in Italy, showcases images from Wilson’s well-known Affinity series. Animal subjects
practically jump off of the page in luminous detail, with each individuating trait articulated with a sharpness that usually feels reserved for the world
of high fashion. Wilson’s technical eye and artistic sensitivity allows for the viewer to have a direct confrontation with the beauty contained within every bird, cat, animal and reptile that he photographs. Through the lens of the endangered, the artist attempts to achieve the ultimate goal of bridging the interspecies divide.

The exhibition pays homage to Warhol’s iconic New York City studio The Factory and offers a distinctly intimate visual diary of the artist’s life and work, including Polaroids of celebrities, artists and friends, such as Debbie Harry, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Dolly Parton, Grace Jones, and Keith Haring.

Notably, Warhol’s earliest photographic works will be presented, offering a glimpse into his experimentation with the medium and how it served as a catalyst for his early silkscreen paintings, commissioned portraits, and commercial work.

ANNE KORNFELD – NAVIGATING UNCERTAINTY

Posted on 2021-11-22

Works on view trace the artist’s journey from India, where she pursued health and wellness, attending the Shivaratri Festival in Spring of 2020 in Kerala, India. On this holy night she captured the atmosphere, light and magic of this spiritual gathering. Following the festival an alarming middle of the night call had the artist fleeing from India, and, after a mad dash through the Mumbai airport, she abruptly returned to the US. She sequestered near Boston to be near family till Summer 2020 and then eventually found her way back to New York where the work reflects the emptiness of the city and the political mood.
