KEN GRAVES – LOST IN THE FUNHOUSE

The exhibition gathers images marked by disorientation, irony and psychological tension. Graves did not treat confusion as a problem to be avoided. He used it as material. His photographs move through scenes of spectacle, performance and emotional strain, where the ordinary slips into the absurd and where humor often sits next to discomfort. The result is work that feels both rooted in a specific American setting and alert to the instability beneath it.

What stands out in Lost in the Funhouse is Graves’ ability to hold chaos in place. His pictures do not simplify the contradictions of modern life. They frame them carefully, letting tension, costume, gesture and chance carry the image. That approach gives the work its force. Even when the scenes feel playful, they also register as exact records of a culture full of strain, performance and self-invention.

The dependable Kuya everyone goes to when they don’t know who else to ask. The unofficial IT guy, HR rep, and therapist, despite having none of those job titles. Tie loosened, collar crooked, defeated by his workload hours ago. Coffee in hand, because it’s the only thing keeping the “I still believe in this company” look on his face.

He’s been “next in line” for promotion for so long, his boss might retire before he does. But Oscar doesn’t mind waiting. He still believes his time is coming.
And when it does, he already knows what he’ll do with it.

WANGECHI MUTU – THE SEASSPIRIT

Wangechi Mutu engages in a distinctive form of mythmaking, often connecting the human body with the natural world. For her forthcoming exhibition, the artist returns to the subject of water, a theme she has explored throughout her practice, not only as a mythical realm but also as a fragile, symbiotic ecosystem.
In a new series of collage-paintings, Mutu conjures a cast of feminine water spirits – figures that are at once powerful, awe-inspiring and unsettling. Imagined as protectors, companions and guides, these aquatic beings can be understood as symbolic inhabitants of both the sea and the subconscious. Created
with Venice in mind, this body of work resonates with the city’s enigmatic character, a place where land and water, history and myth, continually converge.

MOS DEF – THE ECSTATIC (DELUXE PHOTO BOOK + VINYL)

Rhymesayers brings a late-period classic in Mos Def’s storied career with this much needed reissue of his 2009 LP The Ectastic. Released a decade after his standout solo debut Black on Both Sides, it’s easy to draw parallels between the two landmarks, as both deal in rich thematic tapestries and athletic flows, but it’s The Ecstatic that sounds most like where rap was headed. Teaming up with a murder’s row of producers (i.e. Madlib, J Dilla, Oh No and Chad Hugo of The Neptunes just to name a few), who thread the jazz and soul backbone of classic NYC rap with Middle Eastern soundscapes and other experimental samples to build a sound both out of place and time. Mos Def responds in kind with barbs that attack the government-backed war machines tearing the world apart in a way that remains sadly as relevant as ever.
