JEFFREY MILSTEIN – LA NY

Posted on 2015-07-06

Milstein, long known for his images of planes in flight photographed from directly below, reverses the perspective in the current images, offering views of New York and Los Angeles taken from an altitude of 1,000 – 2,000 feet. The distance is far enough that the geometry of the urban streetscape, invisible from the ground, emerges into surprising, often elegant patterns, as in the Masonic-inspired layout of the Park La Brea housing development in Los Angeles, yet close enough that the scenes retain a human feeling, whether it’s the claustrophobia of tiny rectangular houses squeezed next to each other in virtually treeless grids. The images suggest that however chaotic or inscrutable modern life might appear, it is tied to age-old patterns that guide in ways we don’t immediately perceive, but which nevertheless guide us through our daily routines.

CHRISTINA BLOOM – SOLDIERS AND SUFFRAGETTES

Posted on 2015-07-06

Christina Broom is regarded as the UK’s first female press photographer. With creativity and a bold pioneering spirit she took her camera to the streets and captured thousands of images of people and events in London, revealing unique observations of the city at the start of the 20th century.
One hundred years later, a major new exhibition of her works at the Museum of London Docklands reveals the extraordinary story of this self-taught novice who turned photography into a business venture to support her family.

Showcasing many images never seen before on public display, this is the first ever exhibition dedicated solely to Broom, featuring prints and original glass plate negatives, as well as the picture postcards of London that brought her substantial commercial success until her death in 1939. From parades of First World War soldiers and Suffragette processions to royal occasions and sporting events, view life in London through the lens of Christina Broom.

Exhibition runs through to November 1st, 2015
