New York, 1974. Fifty-year-old Chris (Clive Owen) has just been released on good behavior after several years in prison following a gangland murder. Reluctantly waiting for him outside the gates is his younger brother, Frank (Billy Crudup), a cop with a bright future. Chris and Frank have always been different, and their father, Leon (James Caan), who raised them alone, seems to favor Chris despite all his troubles. Yet blood ties are the ones that bind, and Frank, hoping that his brother has changed, is willing to give him a chance – he shares his home, finds him a job, and helps him reconnect with his children and his ex-wife, Monica (Marion Cotillard).

JOHAN NIEUWENHUIZE – IMG_

Posted on 2014-08-04

Johan Nieuwenhuize’s new project, IMG_, is a growing collection of abstract and semi-abstract photographic observations of the city: structures, buildings, cars, and reflections. The work re-presents an active visual archive consisting of images made du-ring Nieuwenhuize’s travels to different cities in Europe and the USA.

The way the images are combined, is based on the Kuleshoveffect, demonstrated by Russian filmmaker Lev Kuleshov in the 1920s. In his short film a portrait shot of a man is alternated with shots of 1. a bowl of soup, 2. a dead child in a coffin, and 3. a woman on a divan.

In each context the expres-sionless face of the man is interpreted differently by the viewer: hunger, sadness, lust.

In his presentations of IMG_, Nieuwenhuize applies this psychological phenomenon in order to shift the meaning of individual images, alter the context and let the viewer associate freely, to form new meanings.

SLOW LEARNER

Posted on 2014-08-04

The group exhibition Slow Learner, curated by Andreas Leventis, brings together a selection of artists who variously employ text, signs, symbols, and photographic images across a range of media to examine the gap between reading and comprehension.

Where outside the realms of art one might typically expect a graphic aesthetic to communicate a concise message or instruction – be it a road sign, a manual, or a restaurant menu – the works featured in this exhibition instead use defined and direct visual language to playfully subvert, withhold, or disavow meaning altogether.

Featured artists – Ghada Amer, David Austen, John Baldessari, Marcel Broodthaers, Matthew Brannon, Alistair Frost, Susan Hiller, Clive Hodgson, Jessica Jackson Hutchins, Jonathan Lasker, Charles Mayton, Ed Ruscha, Joel Sternfeld and Lawrence Weiner.

Opposite – Susan Hiller, ‘So Don’t Let it Frighten’, 1975/81

Exhibition runs through to August 23rd, 2014
