EVERYTHING AND NOTHING

Posted on 2014-08-04

The perception of the fourth dimension explored by the exhibition Everything and Nothing is not transcendental, analogue-spatial or temporal dimension, but is rather determined by current social, political and cultural dimensions and uses the avant-garde tradition as a meta-language which progresses from everything to nothing, which equals everything by purifying artistic activity until it becomes a clear, engaged statement, still determined by the restrictive parameters of our actions. Although it is unlikely real change will occur, the fact that we can engage with the idea brings us closer.
When Ilya Kabakov created The Man Who Flew into Space from his Apartment (1988), he was not concerned with utopia. Individual re-appropriation freed the cosmic dream from being closed within the system and re-established its primary essence – an essence which is not fixed, has no definite form and is not institutionalised, and whose genuineness can only be collective.

Based on these parameters, the exhibition presents a collective urge for change, or a possibility of change, in all its vitality, independent of image transfer and original context, which goes beyond imitation and appropriation.

HENRI MATISSE – THE CUT-OUTS

Posted on 2014-08-04

In his late sixties, when ill health first prevented Matisse from painting, he began to cut into painted paper with scissors to make drafts for a number of commissions. In time, Matisse chose cut-outs over painting: he had invented a new medium.
From snowflowers to dancers, circus scenes and a famous snail, the exhibition showcases a dazzling array of 120 works made between 1936 and 1954. Bold, exuberant and often large in scale, the cut-outs have an engaging simplicity coupled with incredible creative sophistication.
The exhibition marks an historic moment, when treasures from around the world can be seen together. Tate’s The Snail 1953 is shown alongside its sister work Memory of Oceania 1953 and Large Composition with Masks 1953 at 10 metres long. A photograph of Matisse’s studio reveals that these works were initially conceived as a unified whole, and this is the first time they will have been together in over 50 years. The exhibition also places side by side the largest number of Matisse’s famous Blue Nudes ever exhibited together.

LORENZO VITTURI – DALSTON ANATOMY

Posted on 2014-08-04

Vitturi, who lives locally, feels compelled to capture its distinctive nature before it is gentrified beyond recognition. Vitturi arranges found objects and photographs them against backdrops of discarded market materials, in dynamic compositions. These are combined with street scenes and portraits of local characters to create a unique portrait of a soon to be extinct way of life.

His installation at the Gallery draws on the temporary structures of the market using raw materials, sculptural forms and photographs to explore ideas about creation, consumption and preservation.

Exhibition runs through to October 19th, 2014

One particular flannel gradients from red plaid to black, highlighting the contrast between good and evil. A mature take on a childhood mainstay.
