KRISTINE POTTER – DARK WATERS

Posted on 2024-09-23

In Dark Waters, a tour de force of Southern Gothic Noir, Kristine Potter reinvents a centuries-old genre with coolness and clarity. With this recent collection of seductive and darkly brooding photographs, Potter reflects on the Southern Gothic mythos found in the popular imagination of “murder ballads”— traditional songs from the nineteenth and twentieth centuries that often end in death and despair.

Her richly detailed black-and-white images channel the setting and characters of these songs, capturing the landscape of the American South and creating portraits that stand in for the oft-unnamed women at the center of their stories. In doing so, she both evokes and exorcizes the ambient sense of threat that women often grapple with as they move through the world.

FLORENCE HENRI: 1928 -1933

Posted on 2024-09-23

Florence Henri: 1928 – 1933 is an exhibition that brings together a selection of work from the multidisciplinary artist’s portfolio, “12 Fotografien,” published in 1974 by Galerie Wilde in Köln, Germany.

Born in 1893 in New York, Florence Henri immigrated to Europe at the age of two, living amongst family members in numerous locales including London, Vienna, Paris, Munich, and eventually Rome, where she lived with her aunt and was exposed to the avant-garde by her uncle, the Italian Futurist, Gino Gori. By the age of eighteen she became a skilled pianist under the guidance of composer Ferruccio Busoni. Around 1912, Henri relocated to Berlin to continue her music studies and after the outbreak of WWI found herself trapped in Germany where she began composing music for silent films.

MARIEVIC – POOL

Posted on 2024-09-16

POOL is a series of underwater photographs captured across The United States, documenting the country from the bottom of its swimming pools, looking up to the sky.

Pools are iconic. A place of leisure and carelessness, they rhyme with fun and lush. But they also underscores the potential drawbacks associated with these desires in terms of sustainability and resource consumption. This ambiguity makes it a fascinating subject.

Ovid’s fable of Narcissus stands as a timeless exploration of self-absorption and its consequences. At the heart of the story lies a reflective pool, a mirror-like surface that beckons Narcissus into the depths of his own image. MarieVic’s project invites Narcissus’ reflection to express its point of view, across the United States.

XAVI BOU – ORNITHOGRAPHIES

Posted on 2024-09-16

Ornithographies reveal the hidden beauty of bird’s flight paths, stitching several seconds into a single image. Although Ornithographies is a current project, it has a somewhat distant origin, since it is born from the innocent and restless gaze of the child, who once was Xavi Bou. The photographer’s admiration for nature, especially for birds, arose during his childhood thanks to unforgettable long walks with his grandfather. Since then, the photographer’s interest in birds has continued to grow, eventually becoming the focus of his project Ornithographies.

LEICA M11-D

Posted on 2024-09-16

Leica has created a digital camera without a screen – a rare but purposeful decision. With the Leica M11-D, the company sought to return to the classic design of its M-system line while offering the capabilities of a contemporary digital camera.

Introduced in 1954, M-system stands for “Messsucher” in German (or rangefinder in English) but has come to essentially denote “Made in Germany.” The M11-D uses a large ISO dial where the digital screen would normally appear.

The camera can shoot in resolutions of 60, 36 or 18 MP and boasts 256 GB of storage. On the interior, the M-11D uses all the necessary hardware of an up-to-date, albeit simpler, digital camera. Bluetooth connectivity allows for the easy transfer of photos.

PETER KNAPP – NORTH SOUTH EAST WEST

Posted on 2024-09-09

Peter Knapp was born on June 5th, 1931, in Bäretswil, Switzerland. He studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Zurich, where he was influenced by the thinking and aesthetics of the Bauhaus movement. He learned about the beauty of function and modernity, which he came to expertly demonstrate in his typography, logo work, catalogue and poster design, and scenography. This led him to work, in the 1950s, as art director for the magazine Nouveau Fémina and the Groupe Galeries Lafayette. He subsequently won a competition to design the pavilions for the Brussels World’s Fair in 1956 alongside the Russian designer Slavik.

In 1959, the legendary magazine creator Hélène Lazareff recruited Knapp to art direct ELLE, which was then an insurgent, iconoclastic publication on the fashion-magazine scene. Knapp served there until 1966 and then again from 1974 until 1977. During the same years, Knapp also became a photographer in his own right, grafting the Bauhaus tenet of applied art onto the practice of fashion photography in his elegant, expertly composed, and subtly challenging photographs.
