LEE FRIEDLANDER – MARIA

Posted on 2026-09-28

Lee Friedlander: Maria presents a seven-decade portrait of the photographer’s wife, companion and most persistent subject.
The exhibition gathers approximately 50 photographs made from the 1950s to the 2020s, following a relationship through marriage, parenthood, grandparenthood and the quieter years that come after.

Maria appears in the ordinary settings of shared life: reading, driving, talking on the telephone, resting in the sun or absorbed in another book. Lee Friedlander also returns to her distinctive style, recording print dresses, large sunglasses and the composed self-possession that gives even casual moments a formal edge. These are not simply records of domestic routine. They show a man repeatedly looking at someone he knows well and still finding reasons to look again.
