BEV GRANT – PHOTOGRAPHS FROM CUBA, 1969
2026-09-01The photographs record a country in motion and a political project under construction. Grant’s lens follows Fidel Castro at Revolution Square, schools created to expand literacy in rural communities, the Moncada Barracks, and farms across the countryside. Taken in 1969, these images now carry a sharper historical edge, reflecting a moment when Cuba’s revolution remained central to international debate and when the island’s social programs were closely watched by visitors from abroad.
Grant’s approach was never detached. Her work emerged from participation, not observation at a distance, and that is visible here in the directness of the pictures. The photographs register public ceremony, education, labor and landscape without flattening them into propaganda. They stand as records of lived political commitment, shaped by a photographer who moved through the 1960s as an activist, feminist and member of Newsreel, while also working alongside the Black Panther Party, the Young Lords and women’s liberation groups.
