CHIHARU SHIOTA – THE WALL BEHIND THE WINDOWS

Posted on 2023-08-14

Shiota has been collecting discarded windows around Berlin ever since first arriving in the city in the late 1990s, a place she now calls home. Like the Japanese-born artist’s labyrinthine installations that envelop everyday keepsakes in delicate fibers, effectively turning them into materializations of memory, the window holds special significance in Shiota’s cosmos as a threshold device: it protects one from the outside and yet allows visual access to all that lies within its purview. Finding windows across the city, torn from the edifices where they once belonged, was a curious site to behold for Shiota.

REFRESHERS – BUGGED

Posted on 2023-08-07

London producer Refreshers (aka Lukid, one half of the duo Rezzett) returns for the fourth instalment of his run of self-released EPs entitled Bugged. Once again in the vein of rough jungle, Bugged packs plenty of Amen break abuse into its compact run time. The title track rides a circular toasting vocal over overdriven in-the-red bass before a beat switch throws everything into brighter focus. Meanwhile, the B side’s ‘Make Me Feel so Good’ edges closer to classic hardcore with its choppy hi-hats and helium-pitched vocal stabs.

MORT GARSON – ZOOS OF THE WORLD

Posted on 2023-08-07

New York label Sacred Bones continues their loving excavation of the Mort Garson archives with a new compilation entitled Journey To The Moon and Beyond. As opposed to the thematically entwined Plantasia, The Moon and Beyond ties together ad work, soundtracks, scores, and more to provide a top down view of Garson’s monumental 70’s catalogue. From the theme song to the 1974 film Black Eye to the tones he recorded to play alongside the Apollo 11 moon landing broadcast, what ties this art together, as always, is Garson’s playfully inventive synthesis, a bedrock in the development of experimental music.

RIDE – TARANTULA

Posted on 2023-08-07

Legendary Oxford shoegaze progenitors Ride continue their recent reissue campaign with Wichita Recordings, wrapping things up with the final two LPs of their initial run. The second of these new editions to get the remaster treatment is 1996’s Tarantula. Although issued at time of great acrimony for the group, Tarantula boasts some of the band’s best later period songs as they continued further from their noise-blasted beginnings, including the howling retro rocker ‘Black Nite Crash’ and the Britpop inflected shuffler ‘Walk on Water’. This reissue also tacks on 3 of-the-era bonus tracks, which accounts for the band’s final efforts set to tape in their first era.
