ELIZABETH BICK – MOVEMENT STUDIES AND CODA

Posted on 2022-09-19

After a childhood dedicated to training in dance, Elizabeth discovered a choreographic voice through photography. In her exhibit Movement Studies, Elizabeth found urban facades she positioned as stages, and pedestrians as performers – some consciously staged; most unconsciously so. “I am particularly drawn to spaces and people that are naturally theatrical, and the subjects are sharply frozen in the pictures through the use of a very fast shutter speed.” Through this stilling, dress, body movement and backdrop transcend the quotidian urban space into that of an operatic performance piece. Ten works in the show reflect new works from this decade-long pursuit.

MAKAYA MCCRAVEN – SO UBUJI

Posted on 2022-09-12

Makaya McCraven’s latest album In These Times has been long in the making. Spanning over seven years of recordings, the album’s explorative palette reflects this relatively vast timespan, evident immediately in the opening title track’s lilting, luxurious arrangements of baroque orchestras and cosmically minded jazz, and the well deserved applause rhythmically woven into its sonic structure. Across the album’s delicately tailored compositions, hanging gardens of plucks on ‘High Fives’ and ‘Lullaby’ are joined by cascading clicks and chimes, and curious piano ripples meet with winding guitar passages and punchy, crashing waves of drums on ‘The Knew Untitled’.

BUFOBUFO – FLORA AND FAUNA

Posted on 2022-09-12

Ritual Poison label head BufoBufo comes through with his debut album after having landed on the scene in 2017. As well as being his first for Altered Sense, his first full length album takes us on an invigorating journey through different club strains, with breakbeats guiding every step of the way. Traces of funk slink around the bassline of ‘Pigeon’, evolving from smooth undertones to a front and centre synth amidst lush, lowkey breaks. Telephones beep and metallic shards clatter throughout ‘Missed Call’, with piano chords and a booming sub bass pointing in a dub direction over electro-leaning bouncing beats.

IN BETWEEN THE LINES BY LOUIS DE GUZMAN

Posted on 2022-09-12

Filipino American artist Louis De Guzman’s new In Between The Lines sculpture expands his personal and artistic exploration of wading through and rising above chaos. The striking piece features an empowered fist surrounded by colorful geometric fragments that are the essential elements of the artist’s signature aesthetic.

Below the chaotic fragments, a sense of order seems to flow from what would be the forearm. Arcs and spans of color gather and form into the first that rests above. Purpose pushes and perhaps controls the chaos that challenges order.
