2022-09-12Makaya McCraven’s latest album In These Times has been long in the making. Spanning over seven years of recordings, the album’s explorative palette reflects this relatively vast timespan, evident immediately in the opening title track’s lilting, luxurious arrangements of baroque orchestras and cosmically minded jazz, and the well deserved applause rhythmically woven into its sonic structure. Across the album’s delicately tailored compositions, hanging gardens of plucks on ‘High Fives’ and ‘Lullaby’ are joined by cascading clicks and chimes, and curious piano ripples meet with winding guitar passages and punchy, crashing waves of drums on ‘The Knew Untitled’.
