INGE MORATH

Posted on 2021-08-16

Born in Graz, Austria in 1923, Inge Morath lived through the trauma of World War II to establish a career in the early 1950s as one of the few women photographer members of the renowned Magnum Agency in Paris. From this pioneering place Morath would go on to become one of the most significant photographers on the world stage in the second half of the 20th century. Beautifully composed yet full of unstudied energy, Morath’s photographs feature internationally-known figures and people she met on her numerous assignments all over the world, all of whom she captured with a remarkably clear vision and rare humanity. This installation features the 15 wide-ranging works in the 1977 portfolio “Photographs by Inge Morath,” along with her iconic vision of a jaunty llama taking a ride in a car in Times Square.

LIU WEI – NUDITÀ

It is difficult to overstate Cameron’s cultural influence, from impact on avant-garde queer theories and art histories (for example, her inclusion in the epochal Cruising Utopia: The Then and There of Queer Futurity by late cultural theorist José Esteban Muñoz) to the fabulous DIY awkwardness of hipsters and queers coalescing at Weirdo Night, Cameron’s monthly variety show which has become a staple of the Los Angeles cultural landscape. For Cameron, these multiple worlds (elevated, awkward, arcane, accessible, private, public, film, performance, etc.) are interconnected not by some postmodernist gesture of “democratization” or “interdisciplinarity,” which her work certainly exhibits, but by an acknowledgment that all our lives exist multiply, and from colliding versions of ourselves emerges pathos and humor.

ANDRÉ BUTZER & ULRICH WULFF

Posted on 2021-08-16

“André Butzer and Ulrich Wulff show new works on paper. The two artists are connected by a longstanding friendship and artistic relationship. Butzer and Wulff have exhibited, published and organized exhibitions together in various constellations several times in the past. Their works are not only superficially related. The sheets presented at Kugler Gallery, which are to
be dedicated to the understanding of colored surfaces and a harmony of colors, show an inner connection. A target tone always corresponds to a basic tone in the picture. To this roundness and irrational pictorial calculation corresponds the immeasurable tone, which can only be struck carefully.

GUAVID – ORION

“It’s a cliché to say an electronic artist is mysterious, but in the case of Guavid it really is true. With just one previous release on Analogical Force, it was tricky even tracking the enigmatic producer down, let alone persuading him to release more of his sublime music.

And yet here we are, with a four-track EP of timeless electronica.

A bit of a departure from his work on AF, this time the tracks are stripped back electro and techno, the space in the grooves allowing a sense of funk to come through”.
