BARON CLOTHING

Posted on 2021-05-24

Matty D’Arienzo‘s Melbourne and London-based label Baron Clothing Company is back, this time around using the notion of “Good Luck” as inspiration for this new collection.

As D’Arienzo says, “[I] used ‘good luck’ as a concept due to the state of the world throughout the past year — wanting to spread strength, good luck, and positive vibes.” With this in mind, three core elements can be found throughout the collection, notably graphics centered around dragons, Om, and the Rangoli pattern.

The dragon is a symbol of power, strength, and good luck, while Om, as D’Arienzo puts it, is “all-encompassing, the essence of ultimate reality, and unifies everything in the universe.” Lastly, the Rangoli pattern “represents the happiness, positivity and liveliness of a household, and is intended to welcome Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth and good luck.”

Dubbed “The Clone Wars,” the collection spans from jackets, hoodies, and long/short-sleeved T-shirts in sage, white, yellow and black. Motifs and characters of the sci-fi franchise such as Yoda and Padawan Ahsoka can be seen in the namesake offerings. Inspirational quotes “Believe in yourself or no one else will” and “If there is no path before you, create your own” from Season 2 and 7 are also printed on the hoodies. One noteworthy piece is the green Clone Trooper Army hoodie sporting the series’ logo at the center with a trio of Troopers at the back, embellished by a full platoon on the sleeve – all layered in primary colors.

KEVIN RICHARD MARTIN – IN LOVE WITH A GHOST

Posted on 2021-05-24

Kevin Richard Martin (The Bug, King Midas Sound) releases a stunningly powerful rescore of Andrei Tarkovsky’s seminal 1972 movie Solaris on Phantom Limb.

In May 2020, British musician Kevin Martin was invited by the Vooruit arts centre in Gent, Belgium to compose a new score for a film of his choice. Having been long inspired by pioneering Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, Martin tells us that his 1972 masterpiece Solaris was the “natural choice”. The film is an unattested giant, not only of science fiction and Soviet film, but also in the annals cinematic history. And its original score, composed by regular Tarkovsky collaborator and early Soviet electronic musician Eduard Artemyev, is a magnificent work of haunting majesty, a key element to the film’s brilliance. Martin’s challenge was great: “it was with a certain amount of trepidation I stepped into such large footprints,” he writes.

OVERMONO – SO U KNO

Posted on 2021-05-24

The ever-reliable Overmono return to the likewise ever-reliable Poly Kicks imprint for a pure and simple UK garage rubdown. But as is customary in every Overmono release, there’s always a twist of lemon in there. We begin with ‘BMW Track’, coming in at 7 and a half minutes of unbridled breakbeat joy; part-DJ weapon of choice, part-untouchable classic in the making, with a nice ambient dip at the mid-point. Meanwhile, ‘So U Kno’ snips up an RnB vocal sample and lifts an ominous low end, bringing to mind a much more upbeat version of Burial.
