TONY ALLEN – COSMOSIS FT. SKEPTA, BEN OKRI

Posted on 2021-05-10

Decca and Blue Note brings us There Is No End – a posthumous compilation led by Tony Allen. Written in the year before his passing at the age of 79 in 2020, the long list of featured artists include Skepta, Sampa The Great, Lava La Rue, Danny Brown, Damon Albarn amongst many others. It’s hard to quantify Tony Allen’s influence on the musical landscape – from his time as the polyrhythmic percussive engine for some of Fela Kuti’s finest work through to latter day work with Berlin-based Italo-funk duo Nu Guinea, his work spanned many decades and enamored countless many along the way.

SKEE MASK – NVIVO

Posted on 2021-05-10

Skee Mask returns with a surprise eighteen track album on mighty Munich institution Ilian Tape.

A mainstay on the label since he first shot on to the scene in 2014, it’s no hyperbole to state that Skee Mask just keeps getting better and better with each release he shares. Having ventured into a more widescreen, uptempo, multifaceted and altogether more timeless sound on 2018’s seminal Compro after a string of mostly techno-centric releases beforehand, Pool further develops this sound into a place of seemingly limitless potential.

LEE JEANS X ARIES

Posted on 2021-05-10

London label Aries has returned with a new collaboration with Lee Jeans, reinterpreting the brand’s classic workwear and Americana aesthetic through a new lens.

The starting point for the collaboration is the fascination with the American West that existed in Italy throughout the 1970s and ’80s. Images of America were filtered through Italian directors, and were often presented through made-in-Italy Western films, that were shot in the poor southern Italian regions. These areas were unpopular as tourist destinations for both international and domestic travellers, therefore presenting a new vision of Italy through these pastiche films.

EOMAC – ALL THE RABBITS IN THE TIERGARTEN

Posted on 2021-05-10

Ian McDonnell, one half of duos Lakker, noeverything and Lena Andersson, presents his second album under the name Eomac, this time on Planet Mu. Cracks represents a shift in both conceptual and physical terms for McDonnell, having moved from his former base in Berlin to Wicklow, a rural town south of Dublin. These peaceful surroundings have audibly blended into Eomacs sound – his signature scuffed, shuffling drums are often underpinned with warm, searching tones, forming a kind of broken, melodic techno.
