ORLANDO – NASTY

Posted on 2018-02-26

‘Orlando’ is the self-titled debut album from the producer formerly known as Orlando Volcano, who’s previously released on the likes of Gobstopper and Liminal Sounds.

“This song was originally called Nasty Dad,” Orlando explains, “because me and Mitch (Gobstopper boss) wrote the instrumental in New York and he’s a dad and the beat was a bit nasty… but for me Nasty Dad sounds a little creepy and we changed it, but now Mitch wants to change it back. Too late!”

OLIVER LARIC – YEAR OF THE DOG

Posted on 2018-02-26

The animation continues his inquiry into concepts of metamorphosis, encompassing concerns about time and the complex dynamic between human and nonhuman lifeforms. Against a white background, linear animations of fish, fungi, and other figures move and change shape. The lines composing the animations continually extend or contract to zoom in on greater and greater detail, magnifying a sense of time as the images change. While the shapes and figures, as in his previous video works, are drawn from cartoons and Japanese anime, Laric’s subject matter has grown to also include animations based on live footage. He constructed the animation via an exacting technique in which each line moves continually between sequences—in contrast with traditional techniques in which each sequence consists of a series of redrawn frames. As the shapes perpetually transform, an atmospheric soundtrack commissioned from musician Ville Haimala establishes the sense of an unfolding narrative.

RICKY SWALLOW – 4

Posted on 2018-02-26

For the exhibition, Swallow has made a new group of wall and plinth-based sculptures in patinated bronze. The pieces are cast from assemblages created with materials such as rattan, milled wood and cardboard, exploring the grand possibilities of the most ordinary of materials.

Swallow’s elemental sculptures contain combinations of references and form within one body of work, from the fluid more organic compositions cast from twisted rattan, which allow gravity to influence their own designs, to the nuanced industrial and geometric forms that punctuate the gallery. In Swallow’s sculpture, space is a frame for the work.

TOMB RAIDER

Posted on 2018-02-26

Lara Croft is the fiercely independent daughter of an eccentric adventurer who vanished when she was scarcely a teen. Now a young woman of 21 without any real focus or purpose, Lara navigates the chaotic streets of trendy East London as a bike courier, barely making the rent, and takes college courses, rarely making it to class. Determined to forge her own path, she refuses to take the reins of her father’s global empire just as staunchly as she rejects the idea that he’s truly gone. Advised to face the facts and move forward after seven years without him, even Lara can’t understand what drives her to finally solve the puzzle of his mysterious death. Going explicitly against his final wishes, she leaves everything she knows behind in search of her dad’s last-known destination: a fabled tomb on a mythical island that might be somewhere off the coast of Japan.
