OKZHARP AND MANTHE RIBANE – TELL YOUR VISION

Posted on 2016-10-17

Okzharp and Manthe Ribane return with their second EP ‘Tell Your Vision’, a call and response between Manthe’s vocals and Okzharp’s production. Both bring their unique energies to the mix, manifesting in a raw confidence of new moods and temperatures that were brought out from their first taste of touring and living on autopilot. The EP’s title is a reference to its opener, ‘Teleported’, which was created in Okzharp’s car on an exploratory drive through London and inspired by the art and energy they came across. The track opens with a ferocious bass line, with Manthe’s rumbling vocals rolling rhythmically over the top. She takes us with her as she lets the music possess her as if dancing; quickly spitting the vocals back out, urging the listener to “Tell your vision!”. A much more gentle and reflective turn comes on second track ‘B U’. Okzharp’s slow and soft lullaby melody and Manthe’s warm and inspiring lyrics tug at the heartstrings. In the upbeat and playful ‘Maybe This’, Manthe’s vocals flit between a hum that softly swells over the top of Okzharp’s spacey melody, into an energised and bouncing rap. The EP rounds off with the warm anthem ‘Piki Piki’, with the chorus sung in the South African Sepedi dialect. Okzharp’s long synth lines draw us in with Manthe’s vocals melting and blending into the track. ‘Piki Piki’ has an unmistakably positive vibe, which becomes emphasised when Manthe switches to English, with lyrics that advocate self-affirmation and self-love.

FRIEZE 2016 – REGENT’S PARK – LONDON

Posted on 2016-10-14

The 14th edition of Frieze London, one of the world’s most important art and culture fairs, proved to be an exciting and strong presentation of both contemporary works and classics. Frieze, founded in 1991 by Amanda Sharp, Matthew Slotover and Tom Gidley, consists of three international art fairs, Frieze London, Frieze Masters and Frieze New York, and four magazines, frieze, frieze d/e, Frieze Masters Magazine and Frieze Week.

Frieze London, made up of Frieze, Frieze Masters and Frieze Sculpture Park, collectively displayed an extensive range of diverse work from the likes of Hüseyin Bahri Alptekin, Jon Rafman and Anish Kapoor, to Portia Munson, James Turrell and Salvador Dali, amongst many, many others.

Young galleries showcased ambitious presentations including Wolfgang Tillman’s photography from the nineties and Darja Bajagić’s dark, gothic girls. A highlight had to be Richard Avedon’s iconic photograph, ‘Nastassja Kinski and the Serpent’, at Frieze Masters. The provocative image, beautifully captures Kinski’s strength and sexuality, as she stares coolly into the camera.

The Sculpture Park also provided an eclectic mix of new work and 20th century pieces, from Henry Krokatsis’, ‘Kabin’ and Lynn Chadwick’s, ‘Stranger III’. Made up of 18 works spread throughout Regent’s Park, the sculptures created an atmosphere that gave new life the park.

Frieze London joined together 160 galleries from 30 countries, offering an inspiring and overwhelming collection of art that had everything to offer.

ADIDAS ORIGINALS = PHARRELL WILLIAMS | HU

Posted on 2016-10-10

Hu is short for human – human being, human race, humankind,’ said Pharrell. ‘But Hu, itself is also a reference to color. As human beings, we all have a color. We all look different, we all speak different languages, but we’re all connected.’ Pharrell Williams

Building on the limited-edition NMD that launched in July, Pharrell and adidas Originals return with Hu, a diverse range of full-color footwear and dynamic activewear. Celebrating a spirit of equality, acceptance, co-existence and understanding, the collection features flags, stripes, and translations of the phrase “Human Race” in English, French, and Japanese. Pharrell sums up the collection’s message simply:
‘I play for the human race.’

With the launch of Hu, Pharrell looks to shine a spotlight on communities around the world, sharing stories and traditions of humanity. In this first collection Native Americans from North Dakota invited Pharrell into their community to share their stories of compassion and culture, carrying on traditions of language, prayer, celebration and knowledge from one generation to the next.

MONA KUHN – ÁCIDO DORADO

Posted on 2016-10-10

Galería Pilar Serra presents the series Ácido dorado, in what is her third exhibition in the gallery. Mona Kuhn (born in Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1969) lives and works in Los Angeles (USA) from where she is continually exploring her photographic work, well known for its intimate, contemporary representations of the nude. Through the complicity of her figures, to which she brings her knowledge and mastery of traditional technique and iconology, Mona Kuhn portrays the complexity of human nature, interpreting the body as a print of who we are, independently of sex, age or race, conveying a great sensuality to the gaze of the watcher.
