TweetLanders exhibits an homage to the Magritte’s Periode Vache with a continuing body of paintings depicting North American mammals—musk ox, elk, and caribou among them—each delicately coated in Scottish tartan.
Majestically posed within a shallow landscape, Landers fauna seem to exist within a diorama, his subjects trapped within a state of wild splendor and stasis. Their tartaned fur shimmers and moves like a protective blanket, shielding them from an eventual, presumable demise. Tartan, after all, is a system of tribal identification, a way to protect these animals “from indifference on their journey through time”, in Landers’ words.
Accompanying his animals are landscapes of aspen trees glowering warily at the audience from their dark and wintery rootings. Carved into their white bark are images and writing, both integral to Landers’ work since 1990. These humorous and poignant ruminations on the intertwined fates of an artwork and its maker reveal truths about what it means to be a sentient mortal being.

TweetBy 1970, Steve McQueen ruled Hollywood. He was the King of Cool and the world’s most notorious ladies’ man. Hot off the back of classics like “The Thomas Crown Affair” and “Bullitt,” the racing fanatic began production of his passion project, “Le Mans,” centered on the 24-hour car race in France. But the infamously troubled production was plagued with financial troubles, on-set rivalries and the star’s own personal issues.

TweetThe exhibition will include as yet unseen large Bacchus paintings, with loans from the Cy Twombly Foundation and other collections.
Twombly’s enduring importance to the art of the present is attested to by the many recent survey exhibitions in leading international museums. He has been a cornerstone of Gagosian Gallery since the 1980s. Gallery exhibitions of his work presented over the last twenty-five years include “Bolsena Paintings” (1989–90), “The Coronation of Sesostris” (2000–01), “Lepanto” (2002), “Bacchus” (2005–06), and “The Rose” (2009).
Throughout this period, Twombly inaugurated several Gagosian galleries with exhibitions of new work—“Ten Paintings and a Sculpture” (London, 2004), “Three Notes from Salalah: (Rome, 2007–08), “Leaving Paphos Ringed with Waves” (Athens, 2009), and “Camino Real” (Paris, 2010). “The Last Paintings” and “Photographs” toured Gagosian Los Angeles, Hong Kong, London, and New York in 2012.
