ALEX PRAGER

Posted on 2015-11-02

On the occasion of American artist Alex Prager’s first solo exhibition in France, the photographer and filmmaker presents some of her most recent photographs along with her latest film within an original scenography at Galerie des Galeries. La Grande Sortie (2015), a film commissioned for the 3e Scène of the Opéra national de Paris, stars prima ballerina Émilie Cozette and features leading dancer Karl Paquette.

Alex Prager is known for intricately staged works that explore the uncanny elements of today’s individual and social life. Los Angeles, where she was born, endures as a huge source of inspiration in her work; both in terms of subject matter – fantasy, isolation and tribulation – and in the way that she utilizes surrounding industry in order to create her films and photographs. Prager draws inspiration from the cinematic work of Luis Buñuel and English duo Powell & Pressburger as well as from photographers William Eggleston and Enrique Metinides. She also frequently cites the significant influence her personal experiences have had on her own artistic practice, which combines the use of bold colors, unexpected angles and dramatic lighting.

Exhibition runs through to January 20th, 2016

GILBERT & GEORGE – THE BANNERS

Posted on 2015-11-02

THE BANNERS comprise of ten works of which there are three unique copies each. In these works, various phrases such as ‘DECRIMINALISE SEX’, ‘BAN RELIGION’, ‘GOD SAVE THE QUEEN’ or ‘FUCK THE TEACHERS’ are hand-written in black ink on white paper, above which is written in red, ‘Gilbert & George say:-‘, in the artist’s familiar signature. THE BANNERS are, as Michael Bracewell has written in his catalogue essay for the exhibition, ‘materially and rhetorically […] direct, tough, immediate.’ Landscape in format and uniform in scale – their size dictated by the largest sheet of watercolour paper available – they are mounted on linen and hung, like banners, from three brass eyelets across the top of the work.

While THE BANNERS continue Gilbert & George’s exploration of urban text and typography, such as newspaper headlines, posters, flyers, street signage and sex advertisements, they also relate more specifically to a recent ‘living sculpture’, created for the ‘Extinction Marathon’ held in 2014 at the Serpentine Gallery, London. For this event, Gilbert & George stood silently in front of an audience for just over four minutes, each respectively holding a BANNER that read ‘BURN THAT BOOK’ and ‘FUCK THE PLANET’.

Appearing to answer prejudice with prejudice, THE BANNERS attempt to neutralise bigotry by presenting it back through an accessible, instant language that extends beyond the reach of the usual audience for contemporary art. In so doing, THE BANNERS define, as Michael Bracewell has noted ‘a moral vision that is at once libertarian, atheistic, monarchist and existential. All are proactive. They each propose the disruption of modern conventions or sophistry as a means of encouraging individuals to think for themselves.’

Exhibition runs from November 25th to January 24th, 2016

PROJECT X DESIGNS – THE DAYTONA

Posted on 2015-11-02

Following the unprecedented success of the Limited Edition custom DS7 launched by Project X earlier in the year, we are delighted to announce the introduction of the new Limited Edition DAYTONA Series 8 (DS8) to complement the DS7 design.

Vintage watch enthusiasts & owners of the DS7 will immediately recognise the look & feel of the DS8 as inspired by the original ‘so called’ Paul Newman Daytona with 3 colour black dial of the early 1970s. Collectors may also note the correct detail of the RCO (Rolex Cosmograph Oyster) format of the dial text. The DS8 will be delivered with two different bezels, the original steel bezel, and a custom bakelite bezel, offering the wearer the option of two different looks & displaying a knowing appreciation to its original vintage counterparts the iconic model ref. 6263 & 6265.

The Project X DS7 was the most successful Limited Edition released by Project X to date, with all examples being reserved before the edition had a chance to go on general release. We anticipate demand for the new Limited Edition DS8 to be greater still.
