JOSÉ PARLÁ – SEGMENTED REALITIES

Posted on 2015-07-27

The Standard, High Line hotel in New York unveils a new large-scale sculptural installation from the internationally celebrated artist, José Parlá. “Segmented Realities” will be the Brooklyn based artist’s first outdoor installation in the city, and will be located in the hotel’s Plaza space, accessible to the public.

José Parlá: “Segmented Realities” is a new work consisting of three sculptural paintings designed to look like salvaged wall fragments from cultural urban sites where social upheaval has instigated profound transformation. The installation references specific events and places experienced over the course of Parlá’s life. Each brightly colored installation piece varies in dimension and is the result of a combination of the artist’s very physical engagement with materials in his work. The sculptures represent fragments of walls in Havana, Miami and San Juan.

LESLIE HOWARD: THE MAN WHO GAVE A DAMN

Posted on 2015-07-27

Turning a spotlight on an actor who is sometimes eclipsed by his role in Gone with the Wind. The irony of Howard’s involvement in the ultimate Hollywood blockbuster is that in his time, Leslie carved one of the most unique careers in 1930’s Hollywood, taking control of his films in a way few of his contemporaries would dream of. A man of strong principals despite an outward appearance of vagueness, he took a stand for other actors, most famously Humphrey Bogart in The Petrified Forest, less famously William Gargan and Ilka Chase on The Animal Kingdom. Later he insisted on returning to England as World War 2 began, so he could contribute to the war effort – a role which made him an enemy and possible target of the Nazis. A compelling, intimate documentary, boasting much unseen footage of Howard and those he knew.

GRACE WEAVER – TEENAGE DREAM

Posted on 2015-07-27

A self-professed fan of guilty pleasure music, Weaver likes to think of her paintings as pop songs. The title of the exhibition is borrowed from Katy Perry’s hit single from 2010, Teenage Dream.

In Match Point (2015) one of Weaver’s most recent paintings in the exhibition, the vantage point is that of a tennis player taking a moment to bend over and tie his shoelace. A scaled-up male figure with red elongated limbs frames the opposing female player that stands in the distance on the other side of the tennis court. The upside down viewpoint of the pictorial composition contributes to the whimsical aspect of the work, where the difference in scale between the two figures make it seem as if the oversized head of the male character in the foreground is about to kiss (or eat) the miniature female figure in the back.

Weaver’s carefree millennial sensibility is also evident in Meet-Cute, a large two-panel painting from 2014. The painting depicts a busy street scene with bursts of bright color and stylized figures, where a high-heeled woman in a purple summer dress greets a man that carries a child on his shoulders. Weaver’s colorful compositions of curved lines and playful usage of scale construct everyday narratives that feel current yet timeless.

ANTONIO MURADO – DISTANCES

Posted on 2015-07-27

Murado is a technical virtuoso who returns to familiar motifs to continue experimenting with the capacity of paint to express the realities of nature. Whereas many artists lament the mind’s habitual reflex to interpret a horizontal piece as a landscape, Murado embraces it. His work hinges upon illusion as he conjures forms without actually rendering them. From a distance, latitudinal swipes of rusted orange or chartreuse green anchor apparent twinkling cityscapes or mountain ranges. But in actuality, the works are deft striations of pigment impressed with textural patterns.
Similarly, material investigation and process reinvigorate traditional conceits of still life. Canvases are treated with delicate, transparent layers of oil and turpentine that underwrite pools of paint, blown with air. The shapes may mimic flower petals floating in mid-air or across a flow of water, but it is gesture that reigns here over figuration.
