JOHN ALBOK – REVISITED

Posted on 2018-01-29

The exhibition will include extraordinary vintage prints, revealing the soul of the city that was Albok’s home. Photographs of the Great Depression era are mixed with more uplifting images of children and parades and lovers in Central Park. People were his main character in the urban landscape. He brought them together with grace and humanity.

John Albok’s photographs are included in the permanent collections of many important museums including the Metropolitan Museum of New York, The Museum of the City of New York, J. Paul Getty Museum, Amon Carter Museum of American Art, Dallas Museum of Art, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Art.

PATRICK D. PAGNANO – EMPIRE ROLLER DISCO

Posted on 2018-01-22

Empire Roller Disco highlights Pagnano’s series that memorializes the disco era in Brooklyn. Patrick D. Pagnano photographed the famous Empire Roller Disco at its peak in the 1980s. A Brooklyn landmark, Empire was known for being the location that pioneered roller disco and such dance styles such as the Brooklyn Bounce. Pagnano’sphotographs encapsulate the significance that Empire Roller Disco had not only in disco culture, but in the culture and people of Crown Heights, then a neighborhood that had recently experienced riots and whose demographics were rapidly shifting. The exuberance of his subjects dancing in style demonstrate the ability of a space to change the narrative and experiences of its community.

CIG HARVEY – YOU AN ORCHESTRA YOU A BOMB

Posted on 2018-01-22

Cig Harvey’s photographs produce an overwhelming feeling of wonder, admiration, or even fear of the unknown by looking at life on the threshold between magic and disaster, for they are tiny fragments of everyday life captured in a moment of awe. Robert Mann Gallery is pleased to announce You An Orchestra You A Bomb, a new body of work by Cig Harvey. This is the artist’s second solo exhibition with the gallery and opens in conjunction with a newly released monograph of the same name.

You an Orchestra You a Bomb looks at the artist’s relationship with life itself. This new series continues on themes of family in Harvey’s whimsical and otherworldly style, while thinking deeper about what lays ahead in a formative sensory response to how fragile the present can be. Harvey has always experienced the world viscerally, but after a traumatic event, a raw heightened awareness of the temporary nature of life permeates this new work. Through breathless moments of beauty, her images propel us to fathom the sacred in the split seconds of daily life.

RENÉ MAGRITTE – THE PHOTOGRAPHS

Posted on 2018-01-22

The photographs and films of René Magritte came to light in the mid-1970s, more than ten years after the Surrealist artist’s death. The discovery of these gem-like treasures has led to a deeper understanding of the close relationship Magritte maintained with photography. They reveal how he used these tools to experiment with his ideas, while providing rare access to an informal side of the artist and those with whom he surrounded himself. These images, which he often executed or collaborated with others to produce, contribute to our overall understanding of this intrepid artist, and provide key visual insight into Magritte’s relationship with the photographic medium, and its role within his greater oeuvre.

The show unpicks the themes and tropes present in these collective visions of northern England, from Berwick-upon-Tweed to Birkenhead, Doncaster to Preston, considering why these regions, or representations of these regions, are increasingly a source of inspiration and still so idealised today.
