WHOAREI – LOVING YOU AINT COMPLICATED

Posted on 2020-05-11

Sacramento, California’s Whoarei, drops, by some accounts a debut full-length LP to elevate the game set by 2013’s Nothing and 2017’s collection of tunes Vibrations, comes off as a wildly self-assured formal introduction. From the opening spare beat and luscious organ of ‘Tell Me (Heaven Maybe Certain)’, through the early James Blake-recalling ‘I Love You, Cookie’ and the string-adorned title track, we become privy to an artist unafraid of incomprehension.

DEVS ORIGINAL SERIES SOUNDTRACK

Posted on 2020-05-04

Having linked up to score the first season of Hanna back in 2019, the crew of Ben Salisbury, The Insects and Geoff Barrow joined forces once more to compose for Alex Garland’s recent sci-fi series Devs. All artists involved are known for creating work of cinematic scope – Barrow and Salisbury have worked on a number of Garland’s projects at this point while The Insects have also many years in the scoring business behind them. For Devs the contributors largely split off into their usual pairs, with Barrow and Salisbury in one corner and the two Insects in the other – though the nerve-wracking cluster-drones of ‘You’re Fired’ find Salisbury teaming up with the latter party.

HIDDEN SPHERES – KARL

Posted on 2020-05-04

Hidden Spheres is the alter ego of Manchester’s Tom Harris, who first made his mark on the underground circuit with his release ‘The Bloos’ on Moods & Grooves, before following it up with the much in demand ‘Waiting’ on Lobster Theremin offshoot Distant Hawaii.

Here, Tom joins the Scissor & Thread family, the Brooklyn label founded by Francis Harris, and home to music that traverses a number of boundaries. Hidden Spheres fits right in – the five track 1985 EP blends house, broken beat, ambient, jazz and other elements into a heady brew.
