GODTET – ALICE

Godtet may be based in Sydney rather than Melbourne the trio are very much at one with that city’s eclectic new-school jazz style. Praised by the likes of Gilles Peterson and Jordan Rakei, this threepiece taped their second LP II while playing shows in support of their acclaimed 2017 debut album. Comprised of Sampa The Great producer Godriguez, Hiatus Kaiyote’s Simon Mavin and 30/70’s Ziggy Zeitgeist, Godtet make a potent sound that takes in neo-soul, acid jazz, Brainfeeder-style hip-hop and plenty more on II.

DATACH’I – BONES

Posted on 2019-07-15

Three years on from his previous LP System, Datach’i (Joseph Fraioli) returns to Venetian Snares’ Timesig imprint with new full-length Bones. Bones continues the sonic transition that Datach’i began on System. Compared to the frenzied breakcore of his early work, this music is far calmer – there is still great attention to detail in the album’s production, but these tracks generally coast rather than glitch. Cuts like ‘Rockledge 3A’ even come close to the warm house-tronica sounds of artists like Apparat and Lone. While there are still busy moments here – check ‘Wand’ – Bones is by and large a nuanced and welcoming record from a producer who continues to surprise us so many years into his career.

NINA KRAVIZ – STRANNO NEOBJATNO

Posted on 2019-07-08

Nina Kraviz’s best music tends to have a hall of mirrors-like quality. Kraviz classics such as ‘Pochuvstvui’ and ‘Ghetto Kraviz’ are constantly re-obscuring themselves – the moment that they appear ready to reveal their secrets is the same moment that they retreat away. The tracks on the producer’s new EP Stranno Neobjatno have that same wily quality about them. These are minimal techno jacks full of mystery and intrigue.

Opening cut ‘Dream Machine’ is very much in the vein of the other work Kraviz has released through her TRIP imprint. Lilting at around 120-bpm, the undulating groove is punctuated by icy stabs of synth and a typically enigmatic vocal loop from Kraviz. The remainder of Stranno Neobjatno quickens the pace. ‘I Want You’ is the most forthright thing Kraviz has released in a while, and that’s not just down to the title – this urgent, slightly frantic techno tool contains some arresting coldwave synth work. Stranno Neobjatno’s title track keeps the energy high with its sighing vocals and alien synth gurgles.

River Rapid is the new label from acclaimed DJ Eclair Fifi. Known for her tastemaking dj sets steeped in upcoming exclusives and unknown rarities as well as her essential monthly radio show on NTS it seemed only right that she should start her own imprint.

RR001 features 4 brand new tracks by Afrodeutsche AKA Henrietta Smith-Rolla . Building on the sound established on her 2018 Debut “Break What You Make” on the legendary SKAM label – these raw hardware driven tracks evoke classic Rephlex in the same breath as Underground Resistance. Respectful to the originators whilst keeping an eye firmly on the future.
