CASHMERE SOUND

Posted on 2021-10-04

Antonio Scalia is the creative director and roster member of the ICECREAM Skate Team, but he’s ready to venture out on his own and take on a brand new apparel-focused initiative titled Cashmere Sound. The brand was first ideated years ago with legendary creative Pharrell and never was fully executed, but now Scalia has found himself in a position of power to reignite the brand as it has just unveiled its first full fledged collection. “Originally it was a brand Pharrell and I were going to do ten years ago but it never materialized”, he told HYPEBEAST. “About a year ago I revisited the idea and felt it was time! I want Cashmere to be something that communicates all the people, places, artists and brands I have experienced in my travels through time. It’s been a long journey to get to where I am today and I have a lot of stories to tell.”

FLORIN KOMPATSCHER – ROKOKO TINTS

Posted on 2021-10-04

ROKOKO Tints comprises paintings from the years 2018 until 2021, that fill up the exhibition space in a baroque manner. For his show in Vienna, Florin Kompatscher designed two new installative interventions together with the extension of the “red kitchen”. In his painting, the artist has always been generating bizarrely aesthetic dream worlds that are impossible to narrow down stylistically. The form appears to emerge from the subconscious and to hark back to surrealism, while the atmospheric dissolving of colour is reminiscent of impressionism. Especially in the new work series, the serene playfulness of the composition comes across very dynamic and also cheerful in the choice of colours.

RENÉ DANIËLS

Posted on 2021-10-04

René Daniëls began his career exhibiting in the Netherlands in the late 1970s and gained international attention in the early 1980s when his work was shown widely in Europe and the United States. It was at this point that he became identified as a leading artist of his generation, recognised for his unique approach to the medium of painting that was driven by conceptual rather than painterly concerns, and brought together references to art history, literature, and wider cultural sensibilities. Since then, he has been considered one of the foremost Dutch painters within his field and has gone on to significantly influence subsequent generations. In 1987 Daniëls experienced a brain haemorrhage and was unable to continue to work until recent years. As a result, the majority of the limited number of existing works by Daniëls was made before 1987.

DAWOUD BEY – IN THIS HERE PLACE

Posted on 2021-10-04

In This Here Place is the third project in Dawoud Bey’s history series. Working his way back in time, Bey’s first series, The Birmingham Project, (2012), paid tribute to the victims of the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama. The second series, Night Coming Tenderly, Black (2017), departed from figuration as Bey made the landscape his subject with photographs of real and imagined locations along the Underground Railroad. This third, new body of work portrays the physical sites of the forced labor of enslavement. Taken at sites with an unfathomably traumatic past, this series represents a deep witnessing and rich visual description, evoking the past in now unpopulated landscapes. The photographs were all made in Louisiana, along the west banks of the Mississippi River and at the Evergreen, Destrehan, Laura, Oak Alley, and Whitney Plantations.
