THE FATHER

Posted on 2021-02-08

Anthony is 80, mischievous, living defiantly alone and rejecting the carers that his daughter, Anne, encouragingly introduces. Yet help is also becoming a necessity for Anne; she can’t make daily visits anymore and Anthony’s grip on reality is unravelling. As we experience the ebb and flow of his memory, how much of his own identity and past can Anthony cling to? How does Anne cope as she grieves the loss of her father, while he still lives and breathes before her?

TODD SNYDER + NEW BALANCE 992 “FROM AWAY”

Posted on 2021-02-08

An extremely limited-edition of the classic 992 running shoe, the latest drop in Todd Snyder’s long-running collaboration with New Balance is inspired by the idea of a rustic cabin in the woods that’s filled with modern touches. “The idea for this sneaker grew out of a number of inspiration trips I had been taking to Maine,” says Snyder. “And I wanted to try translating the pleasures of outdoor life and the elements of classic outdoor field clothing into a gentleman’s running shoe. The name ‘From Away’ comes from the fact that when you spend time in the state you realize locals are Maine-ahs, and everyone else is From Away.”

Echoing the outdoorsy theme, the sneaker’s pig suede upper in “snuff tan” is complemented by patches of deadstock camouflage fabric that was formerly used to make duck-hunting jackets. The New Balance logo is a simple white “N,” and the accents are in Energy Red, which adds a shot of modernity while nodding to the flannel shirting and caps favored by woodsmen.

DJ GIRL – SLSK TRAX

Posted on 2021-02-08

Chicago’s DJ Girl debuts on D.Tiffany’s label, Planet Euphorique, with a pack of red hot drum tracks. Tightly-wound rhythms race along with unpredictable turns and a syncopated step, making for stripped-back DJ gear of the highest order. Opener ‘And The Crowd Howls’ sets the pace with a barrage of steely percussion and Slsk Trax never lets up from there.

YU SU – KLEIN

Posted on 2021-02-08

Kaifeng-born Vancouverite Yu Su treks along a cross-continental journey with Yellow River Blue. Collaboratively released by Dutch label Music From Memory and Chinese label bié Records, the globe-spanning nature of the LP is further represented in its sound, a detailed web spun from North American/European microhouse and traditional Chinese instrumentation, bringing to mind the elemental quietude of 1970s and 80s work by Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yutaka Yokokura set to the head-swaying grooves of circadian rhythms. The flowing body of water in the title speaks to Yu Su’s own fluid identity, making Yellow River Blue a deeply personal record as well as a beautifully crafted one.

RACHEL KNEEBONE

Posted on 2021-02-08

Rachel Kneebone’s intricate works address and question the human condition: renewal, transformation, life cycles and the experience of inhabiting the body. Kneebone’s sculptures operate in a near-subliminal space, oscillating and blurring the boundaries between the conscious and the subconscious, the real and the imagined, everything and nothing. Working in porcelain, the material properties of her work further heighten and convey an awareness of opposing states, appearing to be not only heavy, solid and strong but also light, fragmentary and soft. This fluid movement between states is reflective of the wide range of art historical and literary sources that inform the artist’s practice. As Ali Smith has written, in Kneebone’s work ‘Michelangelo meets Angela Carter, the renaissance meets the contemporary, while the future simultaneously meets, melts, alters and fuses with the renaissance.’
