PALACE X ANARCHIC ADJUSTMENT

Posted on 2020-04-27

Palace Skateboards has teamed up with fellow London counter-culture brand Anarchic Adjustments for a collaborative apparel collection. The post-punk label was founded in 1986 by Nick Philip and was adopted early on by BMXers in the streets of UK. Anarchic Adjustment’s popularity exploded worldwide shortly after Philip moved to San Francisco and his label was adopted by Southern California’s biking, skating, and rave scene.

The collection with Palace consists of hoodies, long-sleeves, and short-sleeve tees with punk-inspired graphics such as barbed wire and anarchy circle-A symbols, along with Palace’s Triferg branding and Anarchic Adjustment’s logos.

AN-MY LÊ – ON CONTESTED TERRAIN

Posted on 2020-04-27

An-My Lê: On Contested Terrain is the first comprehensive survey of the politically charged work of photographer An-My Lê (American, born Vietnam, 1960). Featuring over 100 photographs, this exhibition presents seven of Lê’s series, providing insight into her evocative images that draw on a landscape tradition to address the complexity of war.

Intimate and timely, this expansive exhibition explores the intricacies of armed combat through the work of a photographer who lived through the Vietnam War. Through Lê’s lens, viewers are exposed to military training, maneuvers, and reenactments, and are invited to question their own relationship to, and complicity in, conflict.

Exhibition runs through to May 1st, 2020

TIGERS ARE NOT AFRAID

Posted on 2020-04-27

In towns along the Mexican-American border, tens of thousands have disappeared or been murdered, victims of the powerful, warring drug cartels, while children at school often have to lie on the floor to avoid crossfire. One such afternoon, Estrella receives three pieces of chalk from her teacher, who tells her each piece will grant one wish. That evening, her mother fails to come home, and Estrella wishes for her mother’s return, but is horrified when she discovers the truth concerning her disappearance. Estrella flees to the streets, joining a band of orphans, led by a boy named Shine, for companionship and protection. At first, the boys resent her presence, but after she rescues one of them from the home of a gang member, they embrace her. Soon afterward, the Huascas, the ruling drug cartel, come looking for the children, seeking a stolen iPhone in Shine’s possession.

DOROTHEA LANGE – WORDS & PICTURES

Posted on 2020-04-27

In her landmark 1939 photobook An American Exodus—a central focus of the show—Lange experiments with combining words and pictures to convey the human impact of Dust Bowl migration. Conceived in collaboration with her husband, agricultural economist Paul Taylor, the book weaves together field notes, folk song lyrics, newspaper excerpts, and observations from contemporary sociologists. These are accompanied by a chorus of first-person quotations from the sharecroppers, displaced families, and migrant workers at the center of her pictures. Presenting Lange’s work in its diverse contexts—photobooks, Depression-era government reports, newspapers, magazines, poems—along with the voices of contemporary artists, writers, and thinkers, the exhibition offers a more nuanced understanding of Lange’s vocation, and new means for considering words and pictures today.

RIVANE NEUENSCHWANDER

Posted on 2020-04-27

Among the most influential Brazilian artists working today, Rivane Neuenschwander’s practice explores the roles of chance, order, control, collaboration, and emotion through a wide range of perspectives and materials. Employing external elements — such as social interaction and natural processes — the artist has developed a unique language to produce complex ideas and experiences. Drawing specifically upon the legacy of Brazilian conceptualism, folk literature, and popular culture, Neuenschwander’s work examines language, nature, geography, and time as they relate to history, fear, and anguish. Widely known for her use of an ephemeral lexicon, the artist probes social interactions through an acute political lens.

Central to this exhibition is the artist’s ongoing research of psychological spectrums and how fear, sexuality and violence influence our culture and politics. While the works on view stem from the current political landscape in Brazil, their impetus traces universal truths and global political trends.
