CLEGG & GUTTMANN – MODERNISMO ITALIANO

Posted on 2019-08-19

Clegg & Guttmann’s constant artistic research, which draws on the archives of history to give shape to complex ideas and concepts, recreates the context in which Modernism developed in Italy, and it does so with powerful emotional overtones on the three foors of the gallery. It examines a period of great scientifc discoveries and philosophical speculation, of social and political change, of rapid industrial progress, and of creativity in art and literature, but also of ideological uncertainties and the rise of populism – many aspects that overlap with what we see in the world today. “A hundred years after the birth of Modernism”, the artists explain, “we fnd ourselves in a state of profound uncertainty about what answers to give to the most fundamental questions of ethics, aesthetics and politics”.

Clegg & Guttmann’s “modernist” reconstruction appears in a choral visual format with texts, images, objects and sounds that go back to some of the great names of the time. It starts in 1890 with Segantini’s Divisionism and then moves on to Luigi Russolo’s Futurist sound experiments, to the literary experiments of Giovanni Papini and Italo Svevo, reaching all the way to the visionary mathematician Bruno de Finetti’s theory of probability in the 1930s.

KELPE – BREAK SYNONYMS

Posted on 2019-08-19

Drut Recordings present six new tracks of breezy autumnal freshness from label founder and electronica stalwart Kelpe, with water and ink artwork from Yannick Pirson.

The EP begins with ‘Interruption’ – a hiss drenched exercise in juxtaposing a heavy yet minimal delayed drum rhythm with a counter-point of languid synth drones, before abruptly taking a sharp turn into ‘Recess’, the longest and deepest cut on the EP. Arguably the focal point of Break Synonyms, ‘Recess’ blends multi layered analog synth arpeggios and harmonies with snippets of home recordings from an audio cassette tape long lost from childhood and reclaimed from the rubbish bin. We then move onto the bright and buoyant ‘Suspension’, which also makes use of field recordings, hazy beats and synths. A new version of ‘Lapse’ follows, then, dropping the tempo somewhat, ‘Freeze’ sounds like a throwback to the red eyed head-nodding melodic hip hop of early Kelpe. The EP closes by re-upping the tempo with the lush and otherworldly extended mix of ‘Intermission’.

SILVER WAVES – A-BIZ / TUNNELLING

Posted on 2019-08-19

Three years on from the brutalist jungle wreckage of ‘EP3’, Silver Waves presents a taster of new material, mapping out an exciting new vision for the project. Assuming a compositional approach inspired by both the methodology of electroacoustic music and the direct communication of contemporary popular music forms, Silver Waves new work brings into focus the perceived material reality of sound and the imagined space it resides in, using energy summation and release as a guiding structural force, yet presents this methodology with careful consideration for the preservation of traditional musicality, succinct accessibility and unfiltered emotional potency.

OK, BALLET FW19

Posted on 2019-08-19

LA-based brand Ok, Ballet‘s Fall/Winter 2019 collection puts a dark twist on a nostalgic circus theme. The fantastical collection features old-fashioned clown graphics, oversized polka dots and mystic references sprinkled in with logo-heavy pieces. “Elements of the otherworldly allure us, the circus, mysticism, magic, and fantasy were focal to this collection,” says accomplished photographer and Ok, Ballet designer Alex Bortz of the collection’s inspiration.

Key pieces in the collection include two black and white short-sleeve button-up shirts, one emblazoned with clown graphics and phrases like “showtime” and “round the clock,” and the other featuring polka dots of various sizes. A black hoodie and T-shirt sport a smoking moon face with the Ok, Ballet logo cleverly emerging from the smoke, while a red sweater, red T-shirt and black crewneck take a simpler approach to displaying the brand’s name
