JOSÉ PARLÁ – ECHO OF IMPRESSIONS

Posted on 2018-10-29

Echo of Impressions features a series of new large abstract paintings and sculptural pieces drawing on key and recurring themes in Parla’s practice including the urban space, human markings, and calligraphy. The title refers to both the physical impressions left around the city by time and passers-by and the inspirations and experiences, which imprint on our psyche. The mood associated with particular locations and scenes is reflected in Parla’s choice of paints, private observations are conveyed in bold brushstrokes, while personal narratives are transcribed in gestural calligraphies. Each layer represents a memory now preserved, each line and shape charting an event of note.

Parla’s lifelong dialogue with the urban subconscious, the tempo and flow of the streets, and musical and literary inspirations all come together in a celebration of color and form in Echo of Impressions. His artworks evoke stories of immigrant roots, city wanderings and human encounters, which reference personal histories while also leaving room for his viewers to find their own stories.

TODD HIDO – BRIGHT BLACK WORLD

Posted on 2018-10-29

For nearly three decades, Hido has crafted narratives through loose and mysterious suburban scenes, desolate landscapes, and stylized portraits. He has traversed North America capturing places that feel at once familiar and unknown; welcoming and unsettling. Nordic mythology, specifically the idea of Fimbulwinter, which literally translates to ‘the great winter’, influenced many of Hido’s new images, which allude to and provide form for this notion of an apocalyptic, never-ending tundra.

Exploring the dark topography of the Northern European landscape enchanted Hido, calling him back on several occasions. This newest publication highlights the artist’s first significant foray extensively photographing territory outside of the United States, chronicling a decidedly new psychological geography.

DON HERON – TUB SHOTS

Posted on 2018-10-29

In November 1982, a 24-year-old, career budding Keith Haring climbed into his bathtub to be lensed by photographer and friend, Don Herron. Appearing for the camera half-naked, the resulting image gives us access to Haring in a moment of blissful intimacy, in what is now arguably one of the most personal portraits of Haring ever taken. Everything from the bathroom’s walls that crawl with Haring’s iconic raving men to the rubber duck that floats near his waist hint at a young artist whose innocence was beginning to merge with the intensity of the outer East Village art scene which he would soar into just years later. It’s this intimacy that transcends Don Herron’s entire Tub Shots series which consists of 65 portraits of famous artists in their bathtubs: a space the photographer liked for its arc and its art historical references.

BURTON X FIRE-KING

Posted on 2018-10-29

Burton has just released a set of mugs in collaboration with heritage glassware brand Fire-King. Both stackable mugs have graphics that pay direct homage to Burton’s early beginnings as an up-and-coming snowboard brand in Vermont. With similar graphics as those found on Burton products in the late-’70s, the set contains an ivory version which features Burton’s retro mountain graphic and “WE ARE RIDERS” text, while the other mug is transparent-green with a deer head motif, a direct reference to Vermont’s flag.

ALYX has collaborated with the brand for two seasons, Spring Summer 17 and Fall Winter 17. Designer and founder Matthew Williams is a California native and ALYX is often inspired by the skate culture of his youth. The SS17 Vans collaboration centered around iconic styles using the fabrication and details true to the nature of ALYX. The second season collaboration reintroduced three archived silhouettes which had not been released for over two decades and readapted them with a personality and identity true to ALYX.
Concerning the construction of the items, the sneakers were manufactured using a special, exclusive rubber treatment; were “coated in durable liquid rubber and baked” to improve durability and rubber-dipped and treated by hand in Italy.
