DANNY LYON – THE AMERICAN SOUTHWEST & MEXICO
2018-12-31For almost five decades Danny Lyon has been chronicling the stories of the Jaramillo and Sanchez families of Llanito, New Mexico in both photography and film, yet few people know about this work. In the process of making his most recent documentary film, Wanderer (2017), the fourth in the “New Mexico” series, Lyon revisited images that he had made many years ago. He has now published them in the Southwestern Portfolio, which includes photographs of the Jaramillos and Sanchezs made between 1967 and 1983. He also rediscovered a number of early, vintage prints of this work.
The exhibition will feature photographs from Lyon’s Southwestern Portfolio, including large format images made in Mexico during a 1973 road trip with the late writer, Harris Dulany. Also on display at the gallery, photographs shown in Lyon’s international traveling retrospective, which opened at the Whitney Museum of American Art in 2016. Etherton will present Lyon’s photographs with two films, so viewers can glimpse the evolution of Lyon’s compassionate vision.
Exhibition runs through to January 5th, 2019
