NIGHTPORTS – STUPA

Posted on 2021-01-04

Nightports follow this year’s Nightports w/ Betamax album with a different take on their rule of restriction. Their simple rule has, until this point, been that only sounds created by a featured musician can be used on each release. On their ‘places’ series, they create music with sounds recorded in a specific location on one day. The sounds on the Wat Chedi Luang EP were recorded at a 14th Century temple in Chiang Mai, northern Thailand on December 22nd 2018.

Just as Nightports’ albums distil and amplify the characteristics of their featured artists, on Wat Chedi Luang they seamlessly evoke a sense of place in their engaging, intricate and melodic productions.

LORD OF THE ISLES – GLISK SCIENCE EP

Posted on 2021-01-04

Scottish producer Neil McDonald records a distinctive set of dancefloor gear and ambient drifters for the label offshoot of Tim Sweeney’s much-loved radio show. The club tracks on the A-side were first created for an ADE performance and Dekmantel podcast. They are from the direct end of McDonald’s armoury, but still ooze grace and improvisational ingenuity. The title track opens the B-side with a stunning waterfall of synth notes, teeing up another, more serene ambient piece in ‘Sisters’. Both were written for a special performance of Lord Of The Isles-style, concert hall sophistication at the Sydney Opera House.

ANDY GARVEY – MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE

Posted on 2021-01-04

“Opening the A side “CPU Limit 99” is full of jungley skittish breaks, acid bass and off kilter rhythms. By the time we hear the voice of Agent Smith creeping out in the first break we could be forgiven for casting our minds back to Metalheadz circa 2002. Next up, “Aoe_Rushin” is the pick of the bunch for us and continues The Matrix theme, albeit less explicitly, via a full on bonkers trip of searing acid, razor sharp drums and smashed up vocals.

On the flip Adam Pits switches up “Aoe_Rushin” into a pacey 4×4 club joint utilising some expansive arrangement and lovely speed garage-esque bass. Closing things out, title track “Set Phasers to Stun” winds things back and rounds up with a deep and meditative cut of melodic electro.”

FACTA – MPH

Posted on 2020-12-28

Wisdom Teeth label-head Facta drops a two part ode to the dancefloor, pitting house and 2 step beats against warping FM synths à la Errorsmith and Mark Fell.

‘Doves’ picks up where 2019’s ‘Rose Red’ left off: all melting, pitch-bending synths that fizz and ping unpredictably around a solid 4×4 beat.

On the flip, ‘MPH’ tugs on the heart strings with a plasticine MIDI melody, percussive vocal chops and a tearjerking set of high-gloss pads.

BIOCHIP – CRUX ALLEY

Posted on 2020-12-28

Synthase found Biochip twisting up Braindance, IDM and electro to their own ends, and Crux Alley is an album which hits similar sonic sweet-spots. Biochip record their music straight from the mixing desk, an approach that gives their tracks a spontaneous energy and one which sometimes leads Speirs and Kochanowski into novel sonic terrain.
