KEVIN RICHARD MARTIN – IN LOVE WITH A GHOST

Posted on 2021-05-24

Kevin Richard Martin (The Bug, King Midas Sound) releases a stunningly powerful rescore of Andrei Tarkovsky’s seminal 1972 movie Solaris on Phantom Limb.

In May 2020, British musician Kevin Martin was invited by the Vooruit arts centre in Gent, Belgium to compose a new score for a film of his choice. Having been long inspired by pioneering Soviet filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky, Martin tells us that his 1972 masterpiece Solaris was the “natural choice”. The film is an unattested giant, not only of science fiction and Soviet film, but also in the annals cinematic history. And its original score, composed by regular Tarkovsky collaborator and early Soviet electronic musician Eduard Artemyev, is a magnificent work of haunting majesty, a key element to the film’s brilliance. Martin’s challenge was great: “it was with a certain amount of trepidation I stepped into such large footprints,” he writes.

OVERMONO – SO U KNO

Posted on 2021-05-24

The ever-reliable Overmono return to the likewise ever-reliable Poly Kicks imprint for a pure and simple UK garage rubdown. But as is customary in every Overmono release, there’s always a twist of lemon in there. We begin with ‘BMW Track’, coming in at 7 and a half minutes of unbridled breakbeat joy; part-DJ weapon of choice, part-untouchable classic in the making, with a nice ambient dip at the mid-point. Meanwhile, ‘So U Kno’ snips up an RnB vocal sample and lifts an ominous low end, bringing to mind a much more upbeat version of Burial.

RUTH MASCELLI – ONE FOR THE VOYEURS

Posted on 2021-05-17

Debut solo album by Ruth Mascelli of New Orleans no wave/glam/industrial group Special Interest. A Night At The Baths is a progression from their previous work under the Psychic Hotline moniker, as well as the electronic rhythms they supply as part of Special Interest, drawing on techno, acid house and ambient music. An album as journey in the best sense, starting with the late night pulse-racing dancefloor menace of “Sauna” and ending with the melancholy dawn chorus of “Missing Men”, with a strong narrative arc in between, told through a deft use of instrumental textures.

LORAINE JAMES – RUNNING LIKE THAT

Posted on 2021-05-17

Loraine James follows up 2020’s Nothing EP with Reflection, her second full length for UK institution Hyperdub. Written during the lockdown summer of 2020, it explores themes of isolation, introspection and hope across eleven tracks. Technicolour, futuristic pop productions meld with R&B, drill and bass spectrum elements; a sonic exploration of contemporary black and queer narratives. For the Hyperdub collectors the crunchy eskibeat of ‘Self Doubt’ will no doubt be a welcome trip, with more wistful melancholic moments to be found on ‘Reflection’ and the Baths collaboration ‘On The Lake Outside’. There’s a backbone of club pressure throughout too, with ‘Let’s Go’ primed to be deadly a big soundsystem.
