BRAINWALTZERA – ITSAME

Posted on 2022-01-17

After launching the Brainwaltzera name in 2016 under a shroud of mystery on SoundCloud, the still-anonymous producer is looking to get personal.

Since his debut full-length Poly-Ana was included in our top 10 albums of the year, Brainwaltzera has hardly made himself scarce. He followed up in 2017 and 2018 with six EPs, maintaining a clip of one EP per year in the years since. His long-awaited follow up album ITSAME comes with the promise of an intimate look at the enigmatic producer, inspired by “navigating the turbulent waters of personal crossroads with cautious optimism for an uncertain future.”

STR4TA – THE INVICTA MIXTAPE

Posted on 2022-01-17

Brownswood Recordings are proud to present an extension of the ever-evolving world of STR4TA, the brainchild of long time friends and collaborators Gilles Peterson and JeanPaul “Bluey” Maunick. ‘The Invicta Mixtape’ is a limited edition cassette format mixed by Gilles Peterson & Sam Bhok (Worldwide FM/Stay Put).

‘The Invicta Mixtape’ features an array of illustrious producers and polymaths unleashing their unique interpretations of STR4TA’s standout tracks. With a percussive stripped-back rework of ‘Dance Desire’ by Steve Conry & Takashi Nakazato; a funk-laced ‘Rhythm In Your Mind’ by Ashley Beadle plus Glasgow’s Nuovi Fratelli add a cosmic disco flare in the mix. Dave Lee’s rework of ‘After The Rain’. ‘Vision 9’ is reconceived by Melé’s rhythmic inventiveness & Delfonic’s virtuoso. Also iconic reworks by technopioneer Dave Aju, the spellbinding Demus Dub & DJ veteran Greg Wilson.

The mixtape honours the importance of Radio Invicta, London’s very first soul station running from the late-60s to mid-80s. The B-side contains the complete STR4TA album.

ANITA LANE – DO THAT THING

Posted on 2022-01-17

Sex O’Clock, which is previously unreleased on vinyl, was planned for release before Anita lane’s untimely death earlier in 2021 as a 20th anniversary edition of the her timeless album. Initially released in 2001, Sex O’Clock was produced by Mick Harvey, featuring co-writes with various Bad Seeds, along with unique interpretations of other songwriter’s tracks including Gil Scott-Heron’s searing ‘Home is Where the Hatred Is’.

Known for being one of the most creative forces to come out of Melbourne’s post-rock scene, Anita came to London in 1980 with The Birthday Party. Credited as a co-founder of Nick Cave’s Bad Seeds, Lane exerted a strong influence over the band and co-wrote the universally acclaimed ‘From Her To Eternity’ and the haunting ‘Stranger Than Kindness’. Whilst also collaborating with the likes of Barry Adamson, Einstürzende Neubauten, Die Haut and Mick Harvey on his celebrated Serge Gainsbourg albums. First time on vinyl with lyric inner sleeve, also available on CD with lyric booklet.

GÁBOR LÁZÁR – BOUNDARY OBJECT

Posted on 2022-01-10

The notions of clear boundaries explode into digitised rubble across Boundary Object, Gábor Lázár’s second offering for Planet Mu. Composed of eight numbered, unedited live tracks, Boundary Object is a hard pivot from the Hungarian producer’s ordered 2020 effort, choosing instead to relish in its controlled chaos. “Boundary Object II” repeatedly assembles into some kind of shape before dissolving into staticky blasts, only to pay off with hints of mutant dance on “III” and “IV.” In stark contrast to the serenely empty room on its cover, Boundary Object is digital clutter, total abandonment of form, and all the more exciting for it.

MODERN STUDIES – LIGHT A FIRE

Posted on 2022-01-10

‘Light a Fire’ is a contrast of a space-psych-shuffle with lush 70s style three part harmonies. Together with the subtly arresting strings (which were written as if for a grand orchestral ensemble but restrained to a trio), these became defining sounds of the new album.

Through the hazy daze of a smoky folk opus, Modern Studies craft rich soundtracks, stuttering Super-8 sketches from a washed-out world of melancholy, hand-tinted and tantalising. Lullaby couplets blossom into gorgeous chamber pop melodies, the drama unfolding behind Emily Scott’s plaintive vocal; part Julie London, part Sandy Denny, a little bit Kate Bush, with a hushed sigh of Joni.

Modern Studies announce new single ‘Light A Fire’ from upcoming album ‘We Are There’ out on 18th February 2022 on Fire Records.
