BIG THIEF – DRAGON NEW WARM MOUNTAIN I BELIEVE IN YOU

Posted on 2022-02-28

Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You is a sprawling double-LP exploring the deepest elements and possibilities of Big Thief. To truly dig into all that the music of Adrianne Lenker, Max Oleartchik, Buck Meek, and James Krivchenia desired in 2020, the band decided to write and record a rambling account of growth as individuals, musicians, and chosen family over 4 distinct recording sessions. In Upstate New York, Topanga Canyon, The Rocky Mountains, and Tucson, Arizona, Big Thief spent 5 months in creation and came out with 45 completed songs. The most resonant of this material was edited down into the 20 tracks that make up DNWMIBIY, a fluid and adventurous listen. The album was produced by drummer James Krivchenia who initially pitched the recording concept for DNWMIBIY back in late 2019 with the goal of encapsulating the many different aspects of Adrianne’s songwriting and the band onto a single record.

IMAABS – DESCIFRAR

Posted on 2022-02-21

The album is a series of beautifully faded musical photographsote of melancholy swells into grief during the very moving Witch Water, which is subtly underpinned with Marissa Nadler’s haunting voice. The clouds soon clear, the mountains reappear, and the wheel of the year and of the generations turns again as A Letter from TreeTops signs off with the same lilting melody on which it began.

PNEUMATIC TUBES – A LETTER FROM TREETOPS

Posted on 2022-02-14

The album is a series of beautifully faded musical photographs, a paean to the wild landscapes of the Adirondacks and Catskills of Upstate New York where Chandler grew up. Gentle melodies are propelled along by synth arpeggiators or laidback sidestick and felt beater drums. Chandler’s wind instruments are woven throughout like wild vines binding the elements together. Towards the end of the album an underlying note of melancholy swells into grief during the very moving Witch Water, which is subtly underpinned with Marissa Nadler’s haunting voice. The clouds soon clear, the mountains reappear, and the wheel of the year and of the generations turns again as A Letter from TreeTops signs off with the same lilting melody on which it began.

OPEN SPACE VOLUME 2

Posted on 2022-02-07

A year after its first edition, the Open Space series returns in order to keep exploring what ambi-ent music might mean nowadays.

A breadth of fresh artists, some new to the label and others renowned for their more dance-centric works, the compilation aims to give each individual artist their creative freedom to explore the space.

Techno producers such as Arthur Robert or label head Len Faki himself keep the beats present but this time focus on evoking states of introspection rather than the shuffle of dancefloors. On the other end of the spectrum, we find seasoned multi-instrumentalist Laraaji, who has been crafting deeply meditative soundscapes since the 80’s. Using the special opportunity, the label reaches outside its usual sphere, inviting artists like the modular synth expert Jeremy Wentorth or Jimmy LaValle’s band project The Album Leaf. All while still featuring some well known veteran producers the likes of John Beltran or Exos.

VEGYN – DON’T FOLLOW ME BECAUSE I’M LOST TOO!!

Posted on 2022-01-31

UK producer Vegyn is back with a vengeance, and a 75 track mixtape entitled Don’t Follow Me Because I’m Lost Too!!. Vegyn sees the prodigious length of Follow Me as a unique look into his creative process, calling its release “cathartic.” Essentially a compilation of lost tracks between 2015 and 2021, it comprises everything from lo-fi hip hop beats to solo piano torch songs to experiments in high BPM dance music. All that adds up to a fascinating snapshot of a young producer relishing in finding his voice.

LONE – VISITED BY ASTRONAUTS (SHERELLE HAD A GROOVE REMIX)

Posted on 2022-01-24

The EP’s title track leads off with a massive departure from the source material, completely overhauling the already-punchy ‘Mouth of God’ into even more propulsive territory with jungle-indebted breakbeats atop its trance-y framework. ‘Inlove2 (One Thirty Mix)’ also ups the intensity, kicking up the BPM and turning Always Inside’s centrepiece track into an acid house workout. The EP’s biggest head-turner though is courtesy of SHERELLE, who delivers a mammoth rework of ‘Visited By Astronauts’ as her first officially released remix. Finding new ground with an ambient interlude that runs under two minutes is already an impressive feat, but SHERELLE conjures delirious footwork out of ‘Astronauts’ while honouring the original’s breathy ambience.
