Pastoral arrangements are pervaded by bittersweet lyrics on Essex Honey, as Hynes mulls over youth and grief with an illustrious host of contributors to help eke out those raw feelings. Across busy arrangements with layered guitars, his vignetted gauzy vocals meet harmonica wails and sighs, lilting folk violin, and tangles of fingerpicked acoustic guitar, erupting in sharp speeding rhythms that elasticate the pace of these tracks.
