808 STATE VS HUMANOID – IN PLACE OF LANGUAGE

Posted on 2026-02-16

808 State and Future Sound Of London have long circled each other as pioneers in the early rave scene, so after decades of trading the occasional remix, rave comes full circle when Graham Massey and Brian Dougans AKA Humanoid finally present their debut collaboration. In Place Of Language is a high octane record no imitators can match, as the originators bring golden age experience to a coursing hifi sound. Illusory synth textures shift and blur between gnarly acid contortions and lush hand drum driven respites, chopping up clanging metal snaps, molten bass licks, and fourth world leaning sax into a tight and slick club weapon.

JOHN AKOMFRAH – LISTENING ALL NIGHT TO THE RAIN

Posted on 2026-02-16

Originally conceived for the British Pavilion, the exhibition transformed the space into a vessel for a series of sculptural film installations titled ‘cantos’ or ‘movements’, each addressing different aspects of twentieth- and twenty-first-century global histories. At Lisson Gallery New York, Akomfrah presents Canto VI, the central multi-channel film of Listening All Night to the Rain which specifically examines pivotal moments in the histories of colonized nations, focusing on the independence movements that swept Africa and Asia from the 1940s to the 1970s.

Drawing on archival footage, the work reflects on the Mau Mau rebellion in Kenya, the Congo’s struggle for independence from Belgian rule, Nigeria’s path to nationhood and the catastrophic aftermath of colonial amalgamation, and the 1947 Partition of India, seen through figures such as Jawaharlal Nehru. These narratives are framed through the diasporic experience in Britain, where personal memory is entwined with the enduring legacies of empire.

BILL ARMSTRONG – ALL A BLUR

Posted on 2026-02-16

Known for his meditative approach to abstraction, Armstrong has spent decades exploring the emotional and perceptual power of the photographic image, challenging the conventions of clarity, focus, and representation.

At the heart of the exhibition is Armstrong’s celebrated Infinity series, a body of work in which imagery dissolves into fields of color, light, and suggestion. Drawing from a vast archive of source images—ranging from historical photographs to personal references—Armstrong rephotographs, layers, and defocuses his subjects until they hover between recognition and disappearance. The resulting works invite prolonged looking, encouraging viewers to engage with photography not as documentation, but as an experiential and emotional medium.

MC D – MC’S

Posted on 2026-02-16

M.C.’s/How Many Miles? is the follow-up solo single and arrival proper of MC D. With DJ Fusion once again handling production and scratch duties, this extended player is no less uncompromising than its predecessor. Benefitting a full release with the now iconic Mendoza green labels, it cemented the young MC in the annals of UK rap history. MC D (aka Darren James) cut one more record for Mendoza as part of his Silent Eclipse project before moving on to future collaborations with the likes of The Principle (Caveman), Deckwrecka, Rodney P and Skinnyman.
