RUUD VAN EMPEL – THEATRE

Posted on 2025-03-24

Van Empel’s process is meticulous and time-intensive, often taking hundreds or even thousands of hours to complete a single image. Using a digital collage technique he has refined since the mid-1990s, he assembles fragments of his own photographs to construct compositions that exist outside traditional photography. These layered, hyper-detailed landscapes celebrate the beauty of nature while also reflecting its tensions, as elements compete for space and attention.

EASTPAK RESIST’R CASE

Posted on 2025-03-24

Eastpak has introduced two new colors of its Resist’r Case, adding “Army Olive” and “Ultra Marine” alongside the recently launched original trio of “Black”, “Fire Red” and “Brushed Metal”.

The Resist’r Case is a hardshell rectangular suitcase with almost no branding, save for a small logo on the frontside of the bag and the brand’s “Built To Resist” motto affixed to its telescopic handle – Eastpak is offering its longstanding 30-year warranty with each case. It is crafted from a durable polycarbonate material that makes up the main body of the bag, with an internal aluminium frame completing the case’s structure. Inside, two main compartments are separated with secure divider closures, one of which features a mesh pocket with zip. All of this sits atop four 360-degree “Silent Japanese” spinning wheels, and for added security the bags have a built-in TSA approved three-digit code lock.

CHRISTINE AY TJOE – COVERED AND COVER

Posted on 2025-03-24

Exploring notions of family silence and painting-as-catharsis, Christine Ay Tjoe’s first solo exhibition in the US debuts a new series revolving around the primacy of expressive gesture and a motif of blood. Borne out of processing the death of a parent and navigating the unspoken, the artist meditates on intergenerational relationships and the role of family silence in burying conflict and pain.

ROBERT FRANK – MARY’S BOOK

Posted on 2025-03-17

Created in 1949, Mary’s Book represents a pivotal moment in Frank’s artistic development, as he experimented with the interplay of images and text. This one-of-a-kind album features seventy-four small photographs, each paired with handwritten inscriptions, revealing Frank’s poetic sensitivity to everyday objects and spaces. Though many images lack human figures, a sense of presence lingers—seen in the way Frank captures the streets and chairs of Paris, weaving in messages for Mary that transform the book into a deeply personal meditation on solitude and connection.

A visual poem in photographic form, Mary’s Book reflects Frank’s ability to evoke emotion through juxtaposition, a technique that would later define his groundbreaking work. The exhibition presents original spreads from the album, held in the MFA’s collection, alongside additional photographs taken in Paris, on loan from the artist’s foundation. Accompanying the show is a special publication featuring the first complete reproduction of Mary’s Book, offering a rare glimpse into a formative chapter of Frank’s creative journey.
