A STRANGE VIBRATION

Posted on 2024-12-02

A Strange Vibration highlights the work of three photojournalists who documented the lives of women and queer individuals on the margins of the Bay Area from the 1970s to the 1990s.

Lenn Keller, a self-taught photographer, captured the Queer Liberation Movement through the perspective of a radical Black lesbian. Her impactful work now serves as the foundation of the Bay Area Lesbian Archives in Oakland. Darcy Padilla’s photography focused on life within the Tenderloin’s Ambassador Hotel during the 1990s, offering an intimate portrayal of how individuals living with AIDS and HIV supported each other amid the height of the AIDS crisis in the United States. Elizabeth Sunflower’s rediscovered archive, particularly her Naked Seduction series, documents the lives of sex workers in San Francisco’s North Beach, showcasing their activism and vibrant lives. The exhibition brings together works from all three photographers, exploring their deep connections with the communities they captured from both inside and outside.

Composed with brightly hued, faceted planes of acrylic paint and fabric collage, Adams’s paintings present visions of Black Americana through figures engaged in everyday leisure and enlivened by individual daydreams and fantasies. The paintings convey seriocomic moments of conflict and resolution that draw from the narrative strategies of television sitcoms and movies, sharing a sense of humor and familiarity integral to the genre. They reflect the significance of pop culture and comedy in defining the joys and contradictions of contemporary life.

YANN TIERSEN – NINNOG

Posted on 2024-12-02

Taken from the Tathlin from a Distance side of Yann Tiersen’s new album Rathlin from a Distance | The Liquid Hour.

French composer Yann Tiersen returns to Mute Records for a new double LP entitled The Liquid Hour | Rathlin from a Distance. Composed of two distinct yet holistically interconnected collections of sound, The Liquid Hour (which comprises the first disk) is built from analog synths and other digital tools, while Rathlin from a Distance by contrast is a suite of reflective and restrained solo piano. While musically contemplative in nature, Rathlin is nevertheless named after a landmark or place Tiersen visited on a 2023 sailing trip, while the title comes from an island in Northern Ireland. Liquid Hour then is sort of like Tiersen’s reversal of concept: music that’s instead outwardly focused with the tracks hemmed into the recording space as he explores everything from ambient to chirping synth pop.
