RODRIGO VALENZUELA – AFTERWORK

Posted on 2022-10-03

Rather than take the approach of photographic “ruin-porn”, where relics of an industrial golden age are depicted as elegantly shambolic, Valenzuela instead chooses to construct fictional environments, in order to imbue his images with the ferocity of his imagination, and crucially, his own physical efforts. Not satisfied with the existing romanticism of blight and resurrection, Valenzuela opts for image making that is defiantly labor intensive and ambitious in scope. Detritus and industrial parts are scavenged over time, taken apart or reassembled, and transformed in the artist’s own studio backdrops, then turned into flat images that confuse the viewer with scale shifts and multiple references. The artist calls forth his own identity as a worker, whether his experience working in construction or his process of art-making, often resulting in equally laborious installations in his exhibitions.

PENNY SLINGER – 50% UNBOXED

Posted on 2022-10-03

Originally created in 1969 as a hand-constructed, snakeskin-bound book for the artist’s thesis project at the Chelsea College of Art in London, 50% The Visible Woman was Slinger’s response to her discovery of Surrealism, which has had a pivotal impact on her practice. An homage to Max Ernst, the book includes photocollage and concrete poetry, artworks with which Slinger sought to rectify the fraught portrayals of women and the void of feminine authorship in the male-dominated surrealist milieu. “Having discovered the magic of Surrealism, I wanted to employ its tools and methods to create a language for the feminine psyche to express itself,” the artist has said. The book’s binding alternates between sheets of poetry and photocollage imagery—her poems are typed onto semi-transparent tissue paper, allowing the prose to interact directly with their visual counterparts beneath. Words take on curvilinear shapes in response to the images beneath them.

GARBSTORE FW22

Posted on 2022-10-03

London-based retailer Garbstore is following up on its recent jacket collaboration with Bodega with a new collection for Fall/Winter 2022 and the campaign takes a trip around the city of London.

Due to the collection taking inspiration from the streets of London, knitwear pieces this Fall are the Made in England Merino Crew sweaters and cardigans — all of which take inspiration from retro sportswear. The comfortable garments are produced with minimalist color palettes, while other options, for those who prefer more vibrancy, are available in fluorescent tones.

HORACE ANDY – MORE BASSEY

Posted on 2022-10-03

A companion album to the critically acclaimed Midnight Rocker, this is Adrian Sherwood’s ‘sound system’ take on the original sessions. Featuring new tracks; radical dancehall re-works with MC interjections from Daddy Freddy and Lone Ranger; and stripped back instrumental version excursions in classic dub reggae style.

Continuing the series that Sherwood began with Heavy Rain, his re-working of Lee “Scratch” Perry’s Rainford album, Midnight Scorchers is both an essential sequel to Midnight Rocker as well as being a powerful album in its own right.

A+A – 060

Posted on 2022-10-03

The 060 EP is the first collaboration between techno superstars Avalon Emerson and Anunaku under the name A+A. Recorded mostly on the fly as these two jetted around the world, it’s among the most melodic music either have recorded. The moody shuffling opening ‘Eternal September’ zeroes in on the ineffable end of summer feeling when the days start getting shorter and the memories of past summer open air parties start getting fuzzier. Whereas the B side’s ‘North Star’ applies a gentle filter over a bumping hardcore line to soften the edges nicely.
