In “Barbarian,” a young woman traveling to Detroit for a job interview books a rental home. But when she arrives late at night, she discovers that the house is double booked, and a strange man is already staying there. Against her better judgement, she decides to spend the evening, but soon discovers that there’s a lot more to fear than just an unexpected house guest.

TweetChicago-based street artist Sentrock celebrates the grind to the top with his new Hustler’s Ambition vinyl art toy from UVD Toys. The figure features his signature bird-masked character hustling to get ahead by pushing an old-school ice cream cart. The focus on the less glamorous, grounded side of learning to ‘fly’ flows out of Sentrock’s uplifting message of self-reliance, spreading one’s wings and success. As a fun nod and wink, the back of the character’s tee reminds all of us to ‘Stay Fly’.

Moor Mother albums are known for confounding and astounding, and Jazz Codes is no exception. Camae Ayewa is a wordsmith of high calibre, her signature deep drawl giving voice to labyrinthine raps, her hands emptying her pockets of sentences that flow endlessly. Amongst a vast web of collaborators, Ayewa draws sprawling collages across Jazz Codes, where glass shards trickle and harps pluck the light from the air, piano keys tap like dancing shoes, Afrofuturist narratives meet operatically trembling vocals and kaleidoscopic beats. The final track calls jazz “a living music”, perhaps the best descriptor for Moor Mother’s complex musical world.

TweetBetween 1983 and 1987 along the California/Mexico border, Ken Light took his Hasselblad camera and flash and rode along with US Border Patrol agents in the middle of the night as they combed the Otay Mesa looking for “illegal aliens.” He was there when they were apprehended – captured by authorities as well as the photographer’s flash. The black and white images are stark, impromptu mug shots in the desert, taken at a moment of extreme vulnerability, when hope gave way to despair, migrants caught in a cruel game of hide and seek.
In piercing words and in strobe lit images caught against the dark of night, Midnight La Frontera’s immediacy underscores the struggle and defiance of those who make the perilous hike for days and weeks in search of the American Dream.
