TOMOKO OBANA AND TORU OTANI

Posted on 2022-07-11

Tomoko Obana and Toru Otani do not know each-other, however their artistic procedures are neighborly, relishing delight in cartographic compositions, found forms and in rich color; earthy to Victorian from the hands of Obana, and from Old World towards Fauve in the hands of Otani.

For her vitrine sculptures, Tomoko Obana collects vintage, industrially produced wares such as water and perfume bottles, jugs, bud vases and more. She makes a mold of these found objects by which she produces one hundred casts; ten each of ten different types of clay slip, kiln fired with various woods, amounting to one-hundred unique “ash glazed” iterations. The artist contemplates the nuances of sooty and dappled surfaces of her objects and settles on arrangements which may, in the Western canon, resemble the paintings of Giorgio Morandi, but which, for the artist, give a nod to the aesthetic disciplines of Japanese Ikebana flower arrangements or dry, rock gardens.

MONCLER GRENOBLE FALL 2022

Posted on 2022-07-11

For Fall 2022, its Creative Director Sandro Mandrino zeroes in on functionality and clothing fit for otherworldly atmospheres, echoed by the Thibaut Grevet-shot campaign. Gaggles of Moncler Grenoble-clad models perch atop a sparse hillside in the latest collection, which is injected with iridescent lilac, spectral white, and silver to combine in the same winter’s night haze that might serve as the backdrop for this collection.

What makes Moncler Grenoble stand out from the house’s other sub-labels is its technical qualities that are met with lightweight construction, resulting in garments that can be worn all year round. For example, the Peyrus jacket is lightweight and compact enough to be folded up and stored in one’s bag, but features full-blown waterproofing come rain. Elsewhere, the color-blocked Ledi jacket is windproof and offers a modicum of waterproofing with the convertible hood flipped into place.

THE DROVER’S WIFE

In 1893, heavily pregnant Molly Johnson (Leah Purcell) and her children struggle to survive the harsh Australian landscape after her husband leaves to drove sheep in the high country. One day, she finds escaped Indigenous Australian convict (Rob Collins) wounded on her property and an unlikely bond begins to form between them. Meanwhile, new town lawman Nate Clintoff realises that Molly’s husband is missing and sends his constable to investigate. A thrilling tale that explores racism and misogyny under colonial rule, and a labour of love for Purcell, who has also adapted Henry Lawson’s short story into a play and a novel.
