OFFICIAL COMPETITION

Posted on 2022-05-23

Having surveyed his legacy and finding it lacking in prestige, an octogenarian millionaire pharmaceutical tycoon (José Luis Gómez) decides to finance a great work of cinema. He purchases the rights to a Nobel Prize–winning novel about sibling rivalry and entrusts the property to enigmatic auteur Lola Cuevas (Penélope Cruz). A visionary conceptualist with a penchant for offscreen theatrics and micromanagement, Lola casts as her embattled co-leads a pair of veteran thespians who couldn’t be less alike: Iván Torres (Oscar Martínez) is a revered educator and legend of the stage much concerned with ethics and artistry, while Félix Rivero (Antonio Banderas) is a glamorous global star known mostly for brainless, bombastic entertainments.

DAVIDE SGAMBARO – NOPE!

Posted on 2022-05-23

The exhibition consists of four bodies of work that form a single narrative and explore the limits an individual has when confronted to precarious situations. Using an irreverent tone, Davide Sgambaro invites us to face playful scenarios with sculptures and installations relating to the world of entertainment, idleness and to certain clichés linked to youth.

Thanks to the irony always present in his work, which contrasts with a certain melancholy, Davide Sgambaro creates intriguing narrative paradoxes that can depict extreme and precarious situations by evoking memories and common imaginaries.

TERRON COOPER SORRELLS – DAMA

Posted on 2022-05-23

Steve Turner is pleased to present Dama, a solo exhibition of new complex and colorful paintings by Chicago-based Terron Cooper Sorrells that convey spirituality, culture and ritual as inspired by three African traditions from Nigeria, Ivory Coast and Mali. These traditions, whether in dance or oral tradition, all relate to the transition from life to the beyond and the endurance of the spirit. Sorrells uses the image of the sky to blend these histories and by conflating them, he aims to emphasize the diversity of the African American experience which brought together enslaved Africans from diverse origins to American plantations where stories, languages and traditions were mixed together. In so doing, he aims to celebrate the past and encourage a new sense of community.
