ARLENE GOTTFRIED – MIDNIGHT

Posted on 2022-02-07

Midnight became my friend in the summer of 1984. Handsome, friendly, and fun to be with, Midnight invited me to an underground Lower East Side club where he was performing a dance to the beat of drums and the poetry of Miguel Algarín and Miguel Piñero. We went to places like Coney Island and the Staten Island Ferry; I took photographs, and he seemed very comfortable.

Midnight had so many colorful stories to tell for such a young person. Ismael, his real name, had only occasionally seen his father. He and his sister, Margie, were raised by a Black woman they called Mommie Margaret. He ran away from home at the age of thirteen. To survive on his own, he became involved in hustling on the streets. He worked at odd jobs and traveled (mostly by bus) to cities all across the United States. Ismael did time in prison and he may have even robbed a bank.

OPEN SPACE VOLUME 2

Posted on 2022-02-07

A year after its first edition, the Open Space series returns in order to keep exploring what ambi-ent music might mean nowadays.

A breadth of fresh artists, some new to the label and others renowned for their more dance-centric works, the compilation aims to give each individual artist their creative freedom to explore the space.

Techno producers such as Arthur Robert or label head Len Faki himself keep the beats present but this time focus on evoking states of introspection rather than the shuffle of dancefloors. On the other end of the spectrum, we find seasoned multi-instrumentalist Laraaji, who has been crafting deeply meditative soundscapes since the 80’s. Using the special opportunity, the label reaches outside its usual sphere, inviting artists like the modular synth expert Jeremy Wentorth or Jimmy LaValle’s band project The Album Leaf. All while still featuring some well known veteran producers the likes of John Beltran or Exos.

LOWFOOL // LEAGUE OF STEEL (EV03) BY FOOLS PARADISE

Posted on 2022-02-07

Fools Paradise expands the reach of its futuristic gridiron competition with the incoming Lowfool // League of Steel (EVO3) vinyl art toy. The third combative team brings Neon Genesis Evangelion into the fray after two initial Gundam-inspired designs. Inspired by the EVA-01 mech, Lowfool’s playing gear sports the iconic purple + green colors along with the war machine’s instantly recognizable angular details. At 18.9″ tall, EVO3 should have quite the imposing presence. As with all of the League of Steel figures, EV03 includes a high-tech football.

The exhibition offers insight into Orta and Miklos, who decided to separate this past year to develop their individual studio practices. Divided into three separate sections, works by OrtaMiklos alongside pieces from Orta and Miklos Anderson’s independent studios. Relationscaptures this rare moment in the careers of these emerging designers by looking at how their approach to design has evolved while working as part of a collective and how that experience continues to shape their approach since leaving the partnership.
